Graduating Thoughts

Thursday May 15, 2008 #36

“Just about a month from now I’m set adrift, with a diploma for a sail and lots of nerve for oars.”

 ~Richard Halliburton

I’m excited to share with you the thrill and pride I am feeling.  This Saturday, I will have the honor of watching my eldest son graduate from College.  I hope some of you will share this joy this year, in the future, or have in the past.  There is nothing quite like a graduation to remind us where we’ve been, but more importantly where we are and the possibilities ahead of us.

Your assignment:  Take a moment and meditate on where you are and recognize the power of your experiences and the incredible opportunities that lie ahead of you.  Every day is a graduation to the next experience.  You’ll be graduating every day for the rest of your life.  Carpe diem!

Dream. Do. Repeat.

Tuesday May 13, 2008 #35

The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers.  But above all, the world needs dreamers who do.”

 ~Sarah Ban Breathnach

One of the recurring themes in JAM with Mike is my push for you to take action on the important goals you have for you, your family, friends, and businesses.  But today’s quote reminds us that action alone is an empty exercise.  This message has resonated with many of you and today, I’d like to share a terrific quote on this topic from New York subscriber B.E.

“Vision without action is a dream.  Action without Vision is simply passing the time.  Action with vision is making a positive difference.” ~Joel Barker

Today’s assignment:  Dream.  Do.  Repeat.

Which Puck is the Right One?

Tuesday May 8, 2008 #34

“I learned that we can do anything, but we can’t do everything… at least not at the same time. So think of your priorities not in terms of what activities you do, but when you do them. Timing is everything.”

 ~Dan Millman

Today’s JAM comes from Northern California subscriber LG.  Enjoy!

When a reporter once asked why Wayne Gretzky was such a phenomenal hockey player, Wayne answered: “I try to be where the puck is going to be.”

The Gretzky quote is pretty common, but my corollary is what I’ve found over the years in the technology industry (Internet and IT) and it’s so true!  My corollary: today we have a hundred (or a thousand) pucks whizzing across the ice, all going in different directions.  The key is to know WHICH puck is the RIGHT one.  I’m always looking for the right puck and trying to figure out where it’s going to be next.  It’s quite a guessing game sometimes!

Rational Indulgence

Thursday May 6, 2008 #33

“People who are always taking care of their health are like misers who are hoarding a treasure which they have never spirit enough to enjoy.”

 ~Laurence Sterne

About once each month, I like to share fun holidays from Holiday Insights.  May 6th is home to two excellent holidays you simply must take advantage of:  National Beverage Day and International No Diet Day

From Holiday Insights:

Beverage Day is a chance to kick back with your favorite beverage and enjoy the day. The term “beverage” is broadly defined. So, were talking about celebrating all beverages today.   Beverage Day should be a day of pleasure and relaxation.  Grab a bottle, can, a glass, or a six-pack of your favorite beverage. Sit down in a comfortable chair….. indoors or out. Slowly sip and savor your drink. Life is good!

International No Diet Day encourages us to appreciate the bodies we have. You could consider it a “Big” backlash against becoming little (err thin), people. This day is intended for us to appreciate the body we have. It encourages us to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes……. and that’s okay.  International No Diet Day is a good opportunity to reassess and evaluate your weight management goals and perspective, and to make certain your efforts to be thin don’t come at a risk to your health. If you decide that continuing your diet is right for you, then use today to take a one day break.

Your assignment:  Go to a GREAT restaurant with a favorite companion; order a fun cocktail, an appetizer you’ve never tried, an incredible main course, and a nice bottle of wine.  Finish with the gooey chocolate dessert and a cappuccino or a glass of port.  YUM!!  I love May 6th!!!  While healthy pursuits are admirable, don’t forget once in awhile to indulge in the pleasures of a wonderful meal of delicious foods and drinks.

You are Worthy of Success!

Thursday May 1, 2008 #32

“Success is a state of mind. If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success.”

 ~Dr. Joyce Brothers

Much of our time is spent dreaming about success.  Last JAM, I asked you to imagine getting the call for the big promotion you have been working for.  What is your reaction?  Joy?  Or, panic?

Many people panic when they finally get what they’ve been striving for.  Or worse, stop striving when they see the prize is within their reach.  Why?  Often, they don’t believe they deserve it.  The lesson here is that the first step in getting what you want in life, be it a promotion, landing a major client, having meaningful relationships, etc., is believing you are worthy of them.

Believe me, my JAMmin friend, you are worthy!

Ready For Success?

Tuesday April 29, 2008 #31

“Success is getting what you want; happiness is wanting what you get.”

 ~Dale Carnegie

Imagine this:  You’ve been working hard for months, maybe years, getting yourself ready for a significant promotion.  You’re doing all the right things:  Getting to work early, planning your time and staying focused, volunteering for tough assignments and then completing them brilliantly; mentoring and otherwise helping your peers and your team; the list goes on.

The phone rings.  It is the call you’ve been waiting for:  The job offer for the promotion.

What is your reaction?  Joy?  Panic?  Imagine it.  Go there deeply.  We’ll talk about it next JAM.
