Reality without blame

Thursday August 28, 2008 #63

“In any situation, the individual most able to describe reality without blame will emerge as the leader, whether designated or not.”

~Edwin Friedman

Ask someone with responsibility why a good result happened and he’s likely to assign responsibility to himself.  Ask him why a poor result happened and he’s likely to assign blame to anything or anyone other than himself.  Why?  I think people are naturally inclined to describe reality with a causal factor – a blaming, if you will.  And yet, true leaders among us whether by title or not will describe negative reality as simply being true, rather than assigning blame.  And they’ll describe a positive reality with gratitude and as a result of another’s actions and/or a great team.

Don’t blame. Lead.
