Give yourself energy and purpose

Thursday, April 1, 2010 #208

“People who cannot invent and reinvent themselves must be content with borrowed postures, secondhand ideas, fitting in instead of standing out.”

~Warren G. Bennis

I know you realize it:  the world is changing around you faster than ever.  Are you keeping up?  Are you learning a little bit every day about technology, new creative ideas, new art, music and literature?  There is way too much to absorb, but by determining a few areas that interest you and intentionally seeking to stay up to speed on these areas, you will enrich your mind and spirit and give yourself energy and purpose – two elements necessary for staying relevant and standing out in our vibrant, exciting present.

Celebrating positive change

Tuesday March 30, 2010 #207

To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.”

~Henri Bergson

We’re finishing up the first quarter of 2010 and I want to encourage you to celebrate the progress you’ve made so far this year on one or more of your goals.  It doesn’t matter how small that progress is – celebrate the positive change.  You are changing every day – the direction of that change is up to you.  By celebrating the positive changes so far this year, you will be helping create more positive and less negative change.

Putting troubles into perspective

Thursday, March 25, 2010 #206

“Like the sun, you need to fall before you rise.”

~unknown author

Today’s JAM is a quote from an unknown author speaking eloquently about how to put current troubles into perspective.  Thank you to new JAMmer Fanny for sharing this with us.

“Like the sun, you need to fall before you rise. When it is sunset, it doesn’t mean the sun will never rise again, it simply means it is time for something else to happen (night). It is the same with our lives. When we are hurt and down, it doesn’t mean we will remain down forever but simply means it is another phase in life that we have to go through. If you always pay attention to sunrise and sunset, after the sun has set when it rises again, it is most likely to shine brighter than the last time; it is the same with humans. When you are down and defeated today, make sure you rise stronger, more courageous and bolder.  No matter what you are going through, it is not forever.” ~unknown

Being a better you

Tuesday March 23, 2010 #205

“Keeping score of old scores and scars, getting even and one-upping, always make you less than you are.”

~Malcolm Forbes

I see it with friends, family and co-workers.  In politics and other public forums.  The endless waste of time and effort people spend on vengeance.  While it may provide temporary solace for a perceived wrong, every moment spent in this kind of effort destroys the opportunity to move forward.  Instead, as Forbes states, it makes you less than you are and certainly as bad as or worse than the person who you believe wronged you.  Instead, practice the art of forgiveness and focus on being a better you.

Where does your path lead?

Thursday, March 18, 2010 #204

“Always be looking forward for big things and spend little time obsessing about the past. After all, why do you think rear view mirrors are so small and windshields are so big?”

~Curtis “Rusty” Frazier

Too many spend their lives living in the past:  both reminiscing for a life that seemed simpler or better, as well as regretting past mistakes and embarrassments.  Other than remembering these positive and negative memories for the lessons they teach them, effective people live in the present moment taking actions that lead them inexorably toward a future defined by their positive and hopeful self and world view.  Where does your path lead?

When patience becomes cowardice

Tuesday March 16, 2010 #203

“Patience has its limits. Take it too far, and it is cowardice.”

~George Jackson

There is good wisdom in patience.  Many situations call for taking a breath, pausing, and reflecting before acting.  However, don’t allow this to delay action once the path is clear.  Waiting at this point quickly can be defined as cowardice.  It is about balance:  not rushing to action and yet not delaying when action is called for.  How to tell the difference?  Experience is the only teacher.  Get out there and experience life!
