The value of a true friend

Tuesday November 9, 2010 #270

“One old friend is better than two new ones.”

~Yiddish Proverb

In a Facebook world that seems to believe that 500 “friends” are somehow real, somehow an accomplishment, I ask you to which of these 500 will be there when you need someone to truly be there for you in an hour of need?  I ask you for which of these 500 would you give of yourself unconditionally?  Never forget the value of a true friend.  Call a true friend today.

Vision is not enough

Thursday November 4, 2010 #269

“Vision is not enough; it must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up at the steps; we must climb the stairs.”

~Vaclav Havel

Longtime readers know that this is a topic of passion for me:  The importance of taking action.  The world is full of dreamers and visionaries who accomplish nothing.  Make a difference with your vision and dreams.  Take action to realize your vision today

People like you

Tuesday November 2, 2010 #268

“Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but the lifelong attempt to acquire it.”

~Albert Einstein

I am attracted to people who are life-long learners.  People who are curious and excited by new experiences and new knowledge.  People who are always looking for ways to improve themselves in their personal and work lives.  People who want to be better friends, partners, employees, leaders, community members.  People like you.  Thank you for sharing in my journey towards wisdom.

Inspiring the fence-sitters

Thursday October 28, 2010 #267

“Lets put it this way: In leadership, we have the water and they are thirsty. Our responsibility as leaders is to offer clean, cool, refreshing water. The decision to drink it is theirs alone”

~David K. Aaker

My good friend and mentor shared this wisdom with me almost 20 years ago and I’ve valued it ever since.  As a leader, your role is not to motivate others but rather to create an environment in which people can choose to be motivated.  In any group of people there will be those who are naturally self-motivated, those who will never be motivated, and a large group of people who are sitting on the fence.  Your job is to inspire the fence-sitters by providing a motivational environment.  One of vision, focus, consistency, respect, hope and enthusiasm.  What kind of  environment are you providing?

See the difference you can make

Thursday October 21, 2010 #265

“If it’s true you can’t take it with you, then maybe it’s about what you leave behind”

I’m not sure who said it, but today’s quote shared by JAMmer DKA certainly rings true.  Our days on this planet will be quite short in the scheme of things, but the impact we can have on our families, friends, businesses and communities can be remarkable and lasting.  This is a good time to pause and ask ourselves if we are satisfied with the legacy we are creating.  Give a bit more of your time, money and heart in the upcoming weeks than you had planned on.  See the difference you can make.  It is real.  It is lasting.  It is you.

Intentional gratitude

Tuesday October 19, 2010 #264

“Ingratitude is natural-like weeds. Gratitude is like a rose. It has to be fed and watered and cultivated and loved and protected.”

~Dale Carnegie

JAMmer DR shares today’s quote which reminds us that the desired state of living in a world we are truly grateful for takes intentional effort.  For most, the natural state is ingratitude – a feeling of the world being out to get us.  And when things do go well, we tend to take it for granted.  I challenge you to be intentionally grateful for the people and circumstances in your life.  Grateful for the negatives as they provide us the lessons we need to grow.  Grateful for the positive, for we know that every positive moment is precious.

Share your knowledge with others

Thursday October 14, 2010 #263

“If you have knowledge, let others light their candle at it.”

~Margaret Fuller

It is our human responsibility to share our knowledge with others.  Do not over think who may or may not need or be worthy of your teaching.  Just give of yourself without wondering what the other person will do with your gift or whether they will respond in kind.  One of my practices is to share quotes that mean something important to me with you twice a week.  What are you doing to actively share your knowledge with others?

Feel the beauty in the world

Tuesday October 12, 2010 #262

“A man sees in the world what he carries in his heart.”

~Johann Von Goethe

I know this is a hard one for some people to accept.  But I assure you it is true:  If you want to be happy, be happy.  It is a choice.  Goethe says it in a different way. What is in your heart?  Are you holding on to past hurts, disappointments, heartache?  Replace them with forgiveness, gratitude, hope, excitement and expectation; and smile.  Feel the beauty in the world and in you and you will see the world come alive for you in all its splendor

The stuff life is made of

Thursday October 7, 2010 #261

“Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time for that is the stuff life is made of.”

~Benjamin Franklin

While a little mindless activity is sometimes warranted, remember that all time spent without intention is lost time.  If you do need decompression time, do it intentionally with psychologically and/or physically healthy activities – exercise, yoga, massage, reading, time playing with your kids, watching the sunset with your partner, etc.  Time is what makes up your life – don’t squander your time!

Allow room for spontaneity

Tuesday October 5, 2010 #260

“The essence of pleasure is spontaneity”

~Germaine Greer

You can have a nice experience when everything is planned out just so, and things happen as you expect them to.  But real pleasure only occurs when you are surprised by an experience that wasn’t anticipated.  If you think about your most pleasurable experiences, you see the truth in this.  The lesson?  Don’t over plan your life.  Allow room for spontaneity, and therefore life’s pleasures, to be a regular part of your life.
