Who are you hanging out with?

Thursday June 23, 2011 #327

“Nothing can come from corn but corn, nothing from nettles but nettles. Men understand this law in the natural world, and work with it; but few understand it in the mental and moral world… A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.”

~James Allen

How do you spend your free time?  Who do you spend it with?  The answers to these questions are critical to the quality of your life and of your own character.  Avoid the gossips and complainers.  The negative energy of these people can and will drain you and embed you in their culture of despair.  Rather, spend your time with people and activities that reflect who you want to be:  positive people who believe in possibilities and who take action to make their dreams come true.  Who are you hanging out with?

The courage to listen

Tuesday June 21, 2011 #326

“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”

You know a person has risen above ignorance when they can engage in a respectful dialogue with someone whose views are diametrically opposed to theirs.  It is a sad fact that so many “educated” people lack the courage and wisdom to entertain differing opinions and views.  This ignorance is the main cause of family, community and global strife.  If we can find the courage to listen, we can find that our differences are few and largely inconsequential.

The case for working hard

Thursday June 16, 2011 #325

“Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard”

~Taras Brown

We each have our gifts, our talents.  The only question is how well we utilize them to help ourselves and others succeed.  Most successful people will tell us that they are no more talented than others – they have simply worked harder or more consistently then others.  What will you do today to work on your dreams?

Failing our way to success

Tuesday June 14, 2011 #324

“Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.”

~Dale Carnegie

It is an interesting facet of our humanity that as we age we understand more clearly the necessity of failure to teach us how to succeed.  And yet, each time a failure occurs we still feel sadness, anger, etc., rather than gratitude for this opportunity to learn and grow.  One friend keeps this quote taped to their computer monitor as a constant reminder.  Perhaps you should too…

Listen fully

Thursday June 9, 2011 #323

“A man never knows the depth of his feelings until he shares it with someone who understands.”

 ~John Peniel

One of the greatest gifts you can give someone is listening, really listening to them express something of importance to them.  By doing so, you enable them to truly mine the depths of their thoughts and feelings.  You’ve probably experienced this yourself with a friend, a parent or a teacher.  Recall how complete you felt.  Make yourself available to others to listen fully.

My simple religion

Tuesday June 7, 2011 #322

“This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.”

 ~Dalai Lama

The various man-made ‘religions’ overcomplicate a simple truth, eloquently expressed by the Dalai Lama:  Simple kindness, if practiced consistently and whole-heartedly, provides all the spiritual sustenance we need.  Whatever your religious beliefs, I ask you to consider simply practicing kindness – beginning with yourself, and then to your friends and foes alike.

Use your talents with intention

Thursday June 2, 2011 #321

“The chief condition on which, life, health and vigor depend on, is action. It is by action that an organism develops its faculties, increases its energy, and attains the fulfillment of its destiny.”

 ~Colin Powell

Thank you for allowing me to share with you some of my favorite quotes regarding taking action.  It is my hope that you have found the quotes and my comments inspiring and that you are taking more positive action in your life.  You really can and must use your talents with intention to impact your life and the lives of those in your family, organization and community.  I will often return to this theme as I continue to share my thoughts through JAM with Mike: one action I will continue to take to impact my readers’ lives.

The first action to take to find happiness

Tuesday May 31, 2011 #320

“Action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action.”

 ~Benjamin Disraeli

Happiness does not happen to you.  You achieve a state of happiness through your conscious actions.  You have to get up and look up to see the beautiful sunrise.  You have to hug your partner to feel the comfort and contentment of their embrace.  You have to work with passionate intent to bask in the glow of the promotion or recognition.  In fact the first action to take to find happiness, is simply to be happy.  Happy people find happiness, and they recognize setbacks as learning opportunities to recalibrate and take more action.
