The Secret of Your Success

Tuesday July 31, 2012 #441

“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”

~John C Maxwell

This is perhaps the most underutilized tool at your disposal to create real change in your life and achieve your potential:  altering your routines.  It is said we are ‘creatures of habit’ and that is certainly true.  Without intentional effort, we will tend to follow our daily rituals and habits without a thought.  Unfortunately, many of these habits are unhelpful, if not destructive, in our desire to change our circumstances.  These can include not eating breakfast (proven to reduce mental acuity), staying up late, over indulging in video games, television, etc.

As you work to remove negative habits and routines, it is important to replace them with positive habits and daily routines.  Otherwise we will tend to return to our negative habits.  It is simply human nature – but you can and must do so to make the changes you desire in your life.

We must do that which we think we cannot

Thursday July 26, 2012 #440

“We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face…we must do that which we think we cannot.”

 ~Eleanor Roosevelt

You can overcome adversity. You can develop the relationship you desire.  You can achieve mastery of skill you are passionate about.  They all have challenges and difficulties associated with them.  And they may require you to develop new skills and capabilities.  But if they are worthwhile pursuits, you must take action to make them possible – even if you currently think you cannot.

The combination of brilliance and compassion

Tuesday July 24, 2012 #439

“A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”

~Nelson Mandela

The leaders we most admire tend to have this combination of brilliance and compassion.  I encourage you to consistently work on developing both characteristics in yourself.  Be an avid learner, a curious soul allows seeking to grow your knowledge and applying it in your personal and professional life.  Be also an avid advocate of people, showing gratitude and love for those around you.  The combination is truly formidable.

You Make Me Proud

Thursday July 19, 2012 #438

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”

~Mother Teresa

I recently received this feedback on something I had done in my work life from a superior:  “You make me proud.”  He was also specific as to why.  I can’t tell you how powerful that was for me.  So simple for this person to share, and so meaningful to me.  This feedback, and the power of it, reminded me how easy it is to make a positive impact on someone with authentic words of praise or gratitude.  I have since intentionally increased the amount of specific and authentic positive feedback for my work associates and family members.

I urge you to do the same.

A Series of Experiences

Tuesday July 17, 2012 #437

“Life is a series of experiences, each of which makes us bigger, even though it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and griefs which we endure help us in our marching onward.”

 ~Henry Ford

Unfortunately we are not born wise.  Wisdom requires time to have experiences, reflect upon them, to learn and grow.  Yes, we must experience pain and grief and sorrow… as well as joy, beauty, and love.  Each experience enriches us – but only if we take a moment to reflect upon it and learn.  From this reflection comes true wisdom.

Focus on Today

Thursday July 12, 2012 #436

“The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time.”

~Abraham Lincoln

If you find yourself anxious over distant potential events, remember Lincoln’s quote and realize that at the pace of one day, each day, you have the time to prepare, redirect efforts, learn, forgive, develop a skill, resolve an issue, and more.  Don’t worry about the distant future. Focus on today and what is right in front of you, and what is in your control.
