The magic of talent + perseverance

Thursday April 18, 2013 #516

“With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable.”

~Thomas Foxwell Buxton

We often believe the myth that we must have extraordinary talent in order to achieve extraordinary results.  This could not be further from the truth.  The vast majority of amazing achievements have been accomplished by ordinary men and women, just like you, who determined that nothing would stop them from making a significant difference.

Perseverance truly is the secret to success.  More than wealth, more than circumstances, more than talent.  Perseverance, the courage to take one more step.  And then one more, and yet another.  This is the secret.  Take that next step. You have it within you!

Demonstrating Gratitude

Tuesday April 16, 2013 #515

“Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts.”

~Henri Frederic Amiel

Unfortunately, even “thank you” is not heard enough, let alone demonstrated gratitude.  Why is it so difficult to say thank you – and mean it?  But let’s move beyond thank you and focus on what we are truly grateful for.  Take the time to reflect on the amazing people in your life and the circumstances you enjoy – many of which are unattainable for millions on our planet.  Fresh water, plentiful food, access to education, and so much more.

More than being thankful, which is merely an expression, I ask you to demonstrate your gratitude – in actions.  Determine a cause that resonates with you – helping children, the disadvantaged, the disenfranchised.  Volunteer your time; provide a small portion of your relative wealth.  Do something.

Don’t know where to start?  Check out this site with dozens of amazing causes, awaiting your action:  http://www.globalgiving.org/.  You can make a difference.  Start now.

The courage of your convictions

Thursday April 11, 2013 #514

“‘Follow your instincts’ shouldn’t be confused with ‘trust your gut,’ ‘ignore reality,’ ‘rely on your sniffer’ or ‘go for glory.’ The rough translation is ‘do your homework well, analyze things carefully, assess the options but eventually trust your judgment and have the courage of your convictions – even if they are unpopular.”

~Michael Moritz

Decisive leaders are valued in all areas of our lives – those that have conviction and confidence to make the tough choices when others are frozen by indecision and fears.  But decisiveness does not mean expediency.  Decisions based solely on ‘gut instinct’ without understanding context and possible implications fail more often than not.  Don’t allow the complexity and pace of today’s life to push you into expediency.  Take the moments you need to understand context, capabilities and options, reflect, and then move with conviction.

Each move forward is a moment of success

Tuesday April 9, 2013 #513

“Never mind what others do; do better than yourself, beat your own record from day to day, and you are a success.”

~William J.H. Boetcker

So much time is wasted comparing ourselves negatively to others. Each of us is a unique person with our own context, challenges, skills, and capabilities.  There is value in looking at others’ success stories for clues on choices, attitudes, and ways they resolved challenges, overcame obstacles, and learned.  But that is where the observation should end and your own reflection begins.

Where are you today?  What are your aspirations personally and professionally?  What skills and capabilities do you own?  What actions can you take in this moment to propel you forward and be a better you?  Each move forward is a moment of success.  Savor it and take your next step.  And should you falter, don’t despair.  Reflect, learn, and move again.

Endless possibilities

Thursday April 4, 2013 #512

“Now is the time. Needs are great, but your possibilities are greater.”

~Bill Blackman

The challenges of our time are numerous.  The challenges in your own life are no doubt significant as well.  The good news?  You, and our society, have everything needed to win against these challenges.  The decision to win is all that is lacking.  We must stop our negative thinking and our mentality of scarcity, and replace these with belief in our potential, in abundance, and the endless possibilities for positive change.  If each of us can make the decision to win, the multiplier effect from your influence will make positive changes in your sphere of influence, and that of the people in your circle.  Decide now.

Create your own luck

Tuesday April 2, 2013 #511

“I’ve found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more often.”

~Brian Tracy

You’ve may have heard this or a similar quote in the past – but it still bears repeating.  One of the great challenges of our society lies with the large percentage that treats life as a lottery but fails to play.  It is true that the only way to success is taking action vs. waiting for good luck to drop in your lap.  Whether out of laziness or weakness of spirit, too many people are waiting rather than acting.  How about you?
