Each day is another opportunity

Thursday June 20, 2013 #534

“I love the man who can smile in trouble, gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection.”

~Thomas Paine

The people I admire the most are those who find the inner strength to face their demons, overcome their circumstances, and find their own brand of success.  They are not infallible, but more often than not they keep pushing forward regardless of the challenges they face.  They have time for a kind word and a helping hand for others even when they are burdened.  And they never fail to say thank you when a kindness is extended to them.

I hope I am as I describe above more often than not.  Each day is another opportunity to be that person and I am grateful for that chance.

Courage to overcome our fears and act

Tuesday June 18, 2013 #533

“People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.”

~Joseph F. Newton

Loneliness stems from fear:  fear which stunts our ability to take the actions that could start and build meaningful relationships.  The antidote to this is hope.  Hope gives us the courage to overcome our fears and act.  If you lack hope, you must act as if you did have hope.  In doing so, the very action you take will provide the subconscious evidence of hope you need to overcome your fears and keep on going.  It may sound like pop psychology but it really works and there is strong scientific evidence to support it.

Get out there and act with the confidence you know you must have to build the bridges to the people you need in your life.  The inner hope will rise with every positive action you take.

Appreciating what you have

Thursday June 13, 2013 #532

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.”

~Frederick Koenig

This truth has been said in many ways, but the essence remains the same:  The truly happy among us are those with the courage and the wisdom to pause and be grateful for what they have vs. yearning for what they do not have.  It does not mean they do not strive for achievements and goals.  It is that they recognize the gifts they already have today which they will use to take action to get to what they are after.  This provides not only happiness, but peace, confidence, and courage.

Take a bit of time each day to reflect on what you do have and then take action to make a difference!

Leaders are learners

Tuesday June 11, 2013 #531

“Try, fail, learn. Try, fail, learn. Try, fail, learn. That’s the leader’s mantra. Leaders are learners. They learn from their failures as well as their successes, and they make it possible for others to do the same.”

~James Kouzes & Barry Posner

Effective leadership is about allowing your people and yourself to try out ideas without undue fear of failure.  Even successful endeavors have elements that do not work as intended.  Whether as a less-than-perfect aspect of a success, or an outright failure, the key to maximizing the learning from any failure, is to be able to reflect, understand what worked and what didn’t, learn from both, and apply to future decisions.  Give yourself and your people this space to safely learn from failures and you will see amazing results!

Choose courage. Choose conviction.

Thursday June 6, 2013 #530

“Vision without action is hallucination.”

~Don Clifton

The world is full of unfulfilled dreamers and unrealized opportunities.  Only those with the courage and conviction in their vision take action to take the vision into reality.  Choose courage.  Choose conviction.  Take action.

Time to recommit

Tuesday June 4, 2013 #529

“In all affairs it’s a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted.”

~Bertrand Russell

In your relationships, your employment, and your beliefs, it is important to reflect on why you have made these choices.  Not to find reasons why you should abandon them, but rather to find the reasons why you are committed to them. This takes courage because it is possible that you may not be able to find reasons to remain committed. But usually this is an exercise of recommitment as you remind yourself of what drew you to these people and things originally.  You change, circumstances change.  Take the time to reflect on what is truly important to you and recommit regularly.

I believe it can be done

Thursday May 30, 2013 #528

“While they were saying among themselves it cannot be done, it was done.”

~Helen Keller

The hallways of our organizations and the thousands of conversations on social media are full of complainers and nay-sayers.  Fight the urge to join the crowd of negative banter.  Rise above it and be the voice that says, “I believe it can be done.”  Because if not you, I assure you that someone will.  And while the negative crowd murmurs and groans, you (or someone else) will take action, solve the problem and make things happen.  The wins always go to those who say “what else can I do?” – and then go do it!

Hearing whaat isn’t being said

Tuesday May 28, 2013 #527

“The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.”

~Peter F. Drucker

Great communicators are not only the erudite and inspiring orators we all think of.  In reality, the best communicators are those with the courage and patience to really listen, to hear what is being said and perhaps most importantly, what is not being said.  If you want to improve your communication skills, certainly practice your ability to inspire and energize others through your presentation style.  But if you want to be truly exceptional, practice your listening skills and focus on what may lie beneath the words being spoken.

Seeing challenges as the gifts they are

Thursday May 23, 2013 #526

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed.”

~Booker T. Washington

Instead of bemoaning the latest obstacle in your path to achievement, recognize the opportunity each has to develop your skills, create learning, and prepare you for the hurdles yet to come.  You know intuitively that you grow most when you are tested by challenges.  Embrace this reality with courage and conviction and reframe your challenges as the gifts they are.

Leader as servant

Tuesday May 21, 2013 #525

“It is only as we develop others that we permanently succeed.”

~Harvey S. Firestone

The greatest gift any leader can give is to ensure in some small way that they allow those around them the space, the challenge, and the encouragement to grow and develop.  When a leader views their role as a servant devoted to unleashing the potential of their team, magic occurs.  Whether a leader by title or circumstance, I urge you to find ways to energize and inspire those around you to become what they are capable of.  This is truly the path to your meaningful legacy.
