The Joy of Connection

Thursday October 24, 2013 #570

“Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition.”

 ~Alexander Smith

seeing love

It is an amazing feeling to experience those moments of connection with another human being.  It could be your child, a friend, a co-worker, a lover, or someone you’ve just met.  That feeling comes from the realization that this person reflects back to you something you want to be, and are.  And when we see it, we rejoice in the connection.  Keep your senses open for this possibility in the people you come in contact with and you will probably discover just how many people you can connect with on this level.

Living an Inspired Life

Tuesday October 22, 2013 #569

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure.
Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.”

a daring adventure

~Helen Keller

Are you living a life you would be inspired by if it were someone else’s?  Before you answer “no”, be sure to take a moment to reflect on the many inspiring things you do daily:  helping someone with a small need, providing a smile to your loved ones and co-workers, and the thousands of other small gestures that make a difference.

Now, the challenge:  Are you living life safe or are you treating life like the adventure it is?  Taking reasonable risks, trying new experiences, meeting new people, learning new skills, stretching yourself?  If you realize upon reflection that you’ve been avoiding life’s richness, do something about it!  Write down 3 things you would do if pressed to “try” something you’ve avoided for whatever reason.

There is no real security.  And, going for that bit of adventure won’t kill you.  Go for it now!

Breaking Free

Thursday October 17, 2013 #568

“The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.”

~Mark Caine

breaking-free

You have the power to overcome all but the most daunting circumstances.  Your foundational belief on life’s potential determines the limit to your power.  Do you view your potential and the potential of those around you from a paradigm of scarcity or abundance? I challenge you to see the world as a place of abundant opportunity, talent, and possibility – which it is.  From this perspective, your current circumstances can be viewed for what they are:  A temporary situation.  Each moment has within it the spark of possibility – for you to take small or large actions to change your current circumstances to your liking and betterment.

Determine where you are headed, decide to succeed, and then do what you must to move in the direction of success no matter the current environment.  It is a world of abundance.  Use your power to create your path to success.

Just to be Alive

Tuesday October 15, 2013 #567

I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable … but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a great thing.

~Agatha Christie

good to be alive

Today is the one year anniversary of my father’s passing. He used to share quotes with me regularly and this was one that I thought quite poignant as I reflect upon his life.  He went through many challenges, as we all do, but always tried (not always successfully) to stay focused on his blessings and being grateful for living.

As you and I go through life and experience the many unavoidable physical and emotional challenges, we can try to remember all that is good in our life, all the amazing talents, relationships, and possessions we have.  It just might get us through these challenges a little faster, with a little less pain and a little more positivity.  If we can do this, I know my dad would be proud.

A Positive Outlook

Thursday October 10, 2013 #566

“We aren’t responsible for what people think about us, but we’re responsible for what we give them to think about us.”

~H.B. Eyring

being watched

People tend to worry too much about what others may be thinking of them.  The reality is that all human beings are focused primarily on themselves and really aren’t spending their time worrying about what you may or may not be doing.  So relax.  In the same way, knowing that everyone is in large part doing their best, don’t spend your own time looking for faults in others.  Focus on the example you set for others so that when they do happen to be looking your way, you can be proud of the image you provide them.

You are an example to your family, your friends and your co-workers.  Be conscious of showing a positive vs. a negative outlook.  Be the kind of person you’d like to be around:  optimistic, positive, and seeing the best in people and situations.  You’ll soon find you are attracting those that do these things themselves.  And as you do this more and more, you will be more confident about what others think of you, giving you more time to feel and be positive.

Will, Desire, and Commitment

Tuesday October 8, 2013 #565

“It’s not about having the skill to do something. It’s about having the will, desire & commitment to be your best.”

~Robert Hernandez

be your best

Chances are you are not satisfied with your progress in achieving your personal and/or your professional goals. There are things you want to achieve.  Perhaps you’ve set reasonable targets for yourself, and maybe even made some effort using the skills you have.  But you’re not where you think you should be and you wonder why.  Assuming you have the requisite skills, the challenge is likely your own level of desire and commitment.  Are your goals really yours, in alignment with your clearly understood core values?  Or are they what you think your goals should be, and really based on others’ expectations of you and their definitions of success?

Take time today to reflect on what is truly important to you and rethink your goals.  If they are in alignment with your core values, you will find the will, desire, and commitment to be your best and achieve your goals.

Your Personal Purpose

Thursday October 3, 2013 #564

“If you know your personal purpose, you’ll have plenty of energy to do what you want to do.”

~Thomas Wilson

personal purpose

If you find yourself fatigued and uninspired as you go about your work or normal activities, pause for a moment and ask yourself if you work or your activity is in alignment with your vision for your life.  Don’t be one of those people who live their whole lives and then look back knowing they spent that life doing work or activities that were someone else’s vision and not their own.  Take the time to determine what is truly important to you, your values, and ultimately what brings you joy.  Begin to take action to ensure your work and activities align to what you truly aspire to.

Difficult Choices

Tuesday October 1, 2013 #563

“Even when people are more successful than they had imagined, nothing is ever achieved without giving something up.”

~Judith M. Bardwick

difficult choices

Success is about choices.  Achievement comes not only from focusing on those actions necessary for success, but perhaps more importantly by intentionally saying “no” to those things, activities, and even people who do not add value to your quest.  These choices can be very difficult. You may have to say “no” to pleasures, to enjoyable activities and relationships.  Knowing you will have to give things up to get what you strive for, be careful what you decide you want.  The spoils of victory must outweigh the cost of what is lost.
