The Opposite of Courage

Thursday November 21, 2013 #578

The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice – it is conformity.”

~Rollo May

There are always opportunities to improve your situation, new ideas to help others, and cool things to be discovered and invented.  You have the power to affect amazing positive change, but you must have the courage to act.  Don’t get lost in conforming to popular thinking and common beliefs.  If you can imagine it, you can begin to take the actions to make your dreams possible.  What can you do today to move yourself, or someone or something you care about forward?

Your Action Steps

Tuesday November 19, 2013 #577

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.”

When we’ve been working hard to achieve something and we come across what seems to be an insurmountable obstacle, our response is often to give up in defeat.  But if the goal is a worthy one, and in synergy with our values, it should not be abandoned!  Rather, rethink your actions and activities and come at the obstacle from a different angle, with additional support, and an optimistic attitude.  While it is true that you may still not prevail, it is certain you won’t if you don’t make the next attempt.  Make the attempt!

Being Ready for Opportunities

Thursday November 14, 2013 #576

“If you spend your whole life waiting for the storm, you’ll never enjoy the sunshine.”

~Morris West

sunshine after rain

It is prudent to understand your environment including risks and your weaknesses.  However, once these are understood, spend your time focusing on your strengths and the many opportunities open to you.  In this way, you will ensure you are open to and ready for the sunshine when it presents itself, rather than hiding in the darkness.

Success via a worthy ideal

Tuesday November 12, 2013 #575

“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.”

~Earl Nightengale

Speedometer - Reaching Your Goal

The idea of the “overnight success” is a myth.  Real, sustainable and lasting success comes progressively, incrementally, in small steps, and sometimes with larger leaps.  But always from the base of a goal that is in alignment with your authentic self.  It is only from achieving this “worthy ideal” that you will feel the satisfaction and joy of real success.  Anything else will always be hollow and transient.  Be sure to take the time to understand your authentic self, what is truly important to you, and set your course for achievement of your own worthy ideals.

“Whenever you want to do something extraordinary, risky, or scary, it’s essential to surround yourself with inspiring, encouraging, like-minded people.”

~Dr. Susan Biali www.SusanBiali.com

I met Dr. Biali in 2006 at a National Speakers Association conference in San Francisco.  I was immediately struck by her energy, positivity, and intellect.  Over the years, we have kept in touch and I have been inspired by her development and story.  I encourage you to visit her site and be inspired as well!

Susan is one of several individuals I have had the pleasure to meet over the years who I surround myself with to inspire and encourage me on my own journey.  Some do this for me directly, others indirectly though their writings.  I find that when I need a boost during a down time, or to turbocharge me for something extraordinary, I can lean on these individuals’ energy and ideas to inspire me.  Who is on your inspiration team?

“Optimist: someone who figures taking a step backward after taking a step forward is not a disaster; it’s more like a cha-cha.”

No matter how talented, how prepared, or how much help you have, you will fail at times.  You may fail often.  To achieve your potential, you must maintain an optimistic outlook and see these failures for what they are:  speed bumps along the way to your achievements.  How can you maintain your optimism?  Start by removing negative influences from your mental diet:  negative people, books, TV, movies, internet.  Instead, surround yourself with positive influencers:  positive people, books, TV, movies, internet… this blog!  The choice is yours.  If you choose optimism, you’ll find that your inevitable failures will be viewed simply as learning events in the dance of life, equipping you for better performance and results in the future.  Cha-cha-cha!

Excellence is an Attitude

Thursday October 31, 2013 #572

“If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.”

~Charles R. Swindoll

When we study those who achieve success over time (vs. the “one hit wonder”), a common characteristic is disciplined focus on excellence.  Not just in their particular talent, but in most aspects of their lives.  Unfortunately in our modern culture of instant gratification and speed, most are not able to sustain such discipline and thus their lives are not what they might want or be capable of.  The message for you?  Be the exception – decide today to be more focused and more disciplined on the little things in life, to begin building a habit of excellence.  You will find that you are in the minority and achievements and their results will fall more to you than to others.

“More is Better” or “Less is More”?

Tuesday October 29, 2013 #571

“There may be no better discernment in life to master than learning to apply the rule of “more is better” to the situations that merit it, and “less is more” to those that need it.”

~Wendy Strgar

over consumption

I do believe that joy and happiness arise from knowing how much “enough” is.  We rush through life chasing after more money, more things, more status, more consumption – never realizing that our fears and feelings of scarcity blind us to knowing when we have enough.  And in this rush to consume and accumulate, we too often neglect those things that we can never have enough of:  love, hugs, kindness, gratitude, and opportunities to give of ourselves.

It is time you look at life through a lens of abundance, rather than scarcity, to allow you to realize you may actually have more than enough monetary and possession based wealth.  Giving you space for more of those intangibles that truly bring joy and happiness.  Today, give a little more, love a little more – consume a little less, accumulate a little less.  You, and those who love you, will be better for it.
