True Belief

Thursday June 26, 2014 #639

“We think we believe what we know, but we only truly believe what we feel.” ~Laurence Gonzales

Logic and factual knowledge are great sources of strength you can and must use to bring context and understanding to ambiguous situations and problems.  However, the only thing that truly keeps us moving with commitment, drive and passion is our belief in ourselves, in others, and in our vision of the future.  And that belief is not due to logic or factual knowledge.  It is due to how we feel.

As leaders, we must provide our teams with a compelling vision of the future that they can believe in.  That vision must be grounded in fact, but even the seeming impossible can be achieved when people believe in their ability to do something great.

Determine your vision for your team’s success, articulate it with passion repeatedly, support efforts to make progress, and watch the magic happen.  And be sure to pay attention to how you and your team are feeling along the way.

Getting Past the Excuses

Tuesday June 24, 2014 #638

Whatever you’re meant to do, do it now. The conditions are always impossible.”

~Doris Lessing

Not enough time.  Not enough money.  Not enough allies. Not enough skill.  Too many obstacles.  Too many other priorities.  And the list goes on…  All the reasons why what you really need to do is delayed or ignored.  The truth is that there will always be reasons – good reasons – stopping you from doing what you are meant to do.  Despite all of that, you must start now.  You must find it within yourself to muster the strength to push forward and do what you must do.  And you know what?  The very act of starting will begin to create solutions that remove obstacles.  Forward motion creates its own inertia you can use to gain momentum and ultimately achieve your potential.  Start now!

Testing Your Character

Thursday June 19, 2014 #637

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” ~Abraham Lincoln

It is an unfortunately common and human trait for someone who is brilliant and heroic in adversity to become self-centered and tyrannical when given power.  Knowing this can be comforting when facing adversity, but also must instruct us to be intentional about our behavior when given power.  A great leader gets his power from trusting and doing all he can for his people and his stakeholders, not from a title.  Whether you are leading in a family, a community, or a business, be brilliant and heroic in both adversity and power.

Over Thinking

Tuesday June 17, 2014 #636

A man of knowledge lives by acting, not by thinking about acting, not by thinking about what he will think when he has finished acting.” ~Carlos Castenada

Before taking action on important goals, it is important to take the necessary time to determine your preferred path.  This can include contextual analysis, building competencies, gathering necessary resources, seeking expert or stakeholder input, considering alternatives, etc.  But this can’t go on and on.  Decide.  And once your decision is made, act.  Many an opportunity is lost when we fail to act; when we fail to begin.  Thinking about it won’t get you there.

Looking for a Sign

Thursday June 12, 2014 #635

“Failure is a signpost to turn you in another direction.” ~Oprah Winfrey

We all fail.  In little ways and in big ways.  The question is never, “will I fail?”  Of course I will.  The question is “what will I do when I fail?”  Reflection is always the important first step. Did I fail because I haven’t yet found the way through an obstacle, and therefore must keep trying different ways?  Or because I need to move in a different direction altogether?  The reflection will help determine the next action to take.

What failure is not, is a sign to give up on a worthy goal.  It may, however, be a sign to rethink whether your goal is indeed worthy.  If it is, don’t let anything stop you from taking actions, even when most fail.

Making Dreams Real

Tuesday June 10, 2014 #634

“When you make “average” great, your dreams become reality.”  ~Suze Orman

What is it you want?  Wealth? A romantic relationship with your partner? A great physique?

The wealthy person’s average spending habits and average investments are based on a consistent, clear and prudent approach.

The romantic couple’s average interactions are warm, caring, forgiving, and loving.

The strong, fit, person’s average daily activities include excellent eating habits and consistent, targeted exercise.

In other words, when you want to achieve anything, decide what needs to be consistently “great” which for others is mediocre.  And then do it!

Enjoying the Journey

Thursday June 5, 2014 #633

“Great results cannot be achieved at once; and we must be satisfied to advance in life as we walk, step by step.” ~Samuel Smiles

It is common to get discouraged on the long path to achieving our dreams.  Anything worth achieving is going to be challenging and may result in many failures as we attempt to move forward.  To not only achieve our goals, but more importantly to enjoy the journey, we must allow ourselves to recognize the many small victories along the way.  This is the definition of the joyful, happy life – the ability to enjoy the journey.  We do this be recognizing the steps taken, and being grateful for the people and the experiences we are fortunate to have along the way.

Making Dreams Come True

Tuesday June 3, 2014 #632

“Vision without execution is hallucination!” ~Thomas Jefferson

Success requires a clear and inspiring vision of what success will look and feel like when it is achieved, to both inspire us and to ensure our actions are moving us where we want to go.  Success also requires the ability to develop and execute the action plan that will move us forward, overcome obstacles, and deliver the desired results.  This takes focus, courage, and persistence.  Dream, oh yes, dream!  But be sure to then focus on execution, or your dreams will be but hallucinations.
