No Drama!

Thursday November 27, 2014 #682

“Drama is an unnecessary factor that’s not needed in anyone’s life.”

~unknown

682

If you watch TV or social media, creating drama in your and everyone else’s life seems to be the rule rather than the exception.  There must be something very human and very addictive about drama.  Given its damaging aspects, I can think of no logical reason why most people seem to thrive on it.  However, I believe that each of us can and must take a stand against drama.  And the place to start is with ourselves.  Next time you are tempted to indulge in other people’s dramatics, or to create your own – STOP!  Take a breath, reflect on the true value of the situation and decide not to engage.  If each of us can commit to do this, imagine how much more positive our lives would be!  No more drama – it starts now.

Making Ideas Happen

Tuesday November 25, 2014 #681

“An idea is something you DO. Not something you have.”

~Hugh MacLeod

681

Generating new ideas is an energizing exercise whether by yourself or with a team committed to make improvements.  However, too often these ideas remain just that – ideas.  Until someone has the courage and capacity to bring an idea to life, nothing happens.  Don’t let a good idea die, whether it is yours or your team’s.  Be the one who takes action to breathe life into an idea that would otherwise remain dormant.  It could make all the difference.

Knowing What You Really Want

Thursday November 20, 2014 #680

“As long as we are persistent in our pursuit of our deepest destiny, we will continue to grow. We cannot choose the day or time when we will fully bloom. It happens in its own time.”

~Denis Waitley

680

Often the biggest challenge to achievement is knowing what you really want.  The people around you and popular culture will aggressively attempt to define this for you – how you should look, the possessions you should buy, the career you should have, and more.  Step one in the journey to becoming the best “you”, is taking the time to reflect on who and what inspires you and how best to bring your talents to the world.  Only you can make this decision.  Once you are able to determine your desired destination, persistently move toward it by taking actions daily – even small ones – that move you forward.  Whether you are 20 or 60, it is never too late to rethink your destination and get on the path that allows you to fully bloom.

Commitment to Excellence

Tuesday November 18, 2014 #679

“Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek.”

~Mario Andretti

679

Success begins with the desire to achieve a worthy goal or outcome, and I don’t know of a worthy goal that lacks significant obstacles requiring determination and persistence to overcome them.  So if you find yourself languishing in mediocrity, check first if you have the desire to achieve something great in the work or the environment you are in.  Without that desire, you’ll lack the motivation necessary to push through the inevitable challenges and achieve your worthy goal.

Conquering Fears

Sunday November 16, 2014 #678

“They can conquer who believe they can. He has not learned the first lesson is life who does not every day surmount a fear.”

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

678

Everyone has fears.  Those who appear fearless have merely learned to face and conquer their fears through tenacious action and a stubborn belief in their own ability to persevere.  This ability is learned and only gained through experience and will.  Don’t think you need to do this alone.  Share your fears with those you care about and enlist their help and guidance in your quest to accomplish your goals and purpose.  Get out there and push through the challenges of the day and gain the experience that will serve you well through the normal messiness of life.

Overcoming Obstacles

Tuesday November 11, 2014 #677

“History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heart-breaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.”

~B.C. Forbes

677

At some point in your life you will be confronted with tragedy and loss, maybe several times.  Our ability to experience and then move beyond these challenges is a uniquely human trait that we all possess, but must have the will to utilize.  Perhaps more challenging than these major events are the thousands of little struggles we face each and every day.  That same will must come into play to avoid getting discouraged by the daily annoyances we encounter.  So whether to handle the small annoyance or the major tragedy, our will to not only survive, but thrive, is key.  We can and will find this internal strength both through intentional action, as well as surrounding ourselves with positive and tenacious people who love us.

Effective Leaders

Thursday November 6, 2014 #676

“Patience and tenacity of purpose are worth more than twice their weight of cleverness.”

~Thomas H. Huxley

676

I often encounter clever people who are able to devise amazing ways to resolve seemingly insurmountable challenges, and yet who lack the confidence and tenacity to put their ideas into place and push them to success.  Similarly, there are those who are unable to find these clever solutions on their own, but when they understand the purpose and vision of those who can they are unstoppable.  The effective leader therefore, is the one who puts together teams of complementary talents: clever problem solvers and patient and tenacious doers.

Keep Moving

Tuesday November 4, 2014 #675

“Your biggest break can come from never quitting. Being at the right place at the right time can only happen when you keep moving toward the next opportunity.”

~Arthur Pine

675

We must be tenacious as we strive for those things for that really matter, such as our health, our relationships, and bringing success to others through our unique talents.  You will encounter obstacles in the form of environmental changes, challenging people, and your own weaknesses, and all of these are almost always surmountable.  But you will not do so if you give up.  Those that seem to always be at “the right place at the right time” are simply those who keep moving despite setbacks and difficulties.  Keep moving!

Discipline

Thursday October 30, 2014 #674

“Cheerfulness in most cheerful people, is the rich and satisfying result of strenuous discipline.”

~Edwin P. Whipple

674

It may seem counter-intuitive, but it is true that happiness and contentment with life usually stems from disciplined living.  Whether this is discipline toward exercise, diet, loyalty, integrity or commitment, discipline brings a sense of well-being and accomplishment which forms the basis of joy and fulfillment.

Be disciplined to those things that matter most to you and the people you love, and you will find yourself cheerful and content more often than not.

Evolving Ideas

Tuesday October 28, 2014 #673

“The difference between perseverance and obstinacy is, that one often comes from a strong will, and the other from a strong won’t.”

~H.W. Beecher

673

The most frustrating people for me are those I care about who are unable or unwilling to consider views other than their own.  The world is forever evolving and this is particularly true for people and circumstances.  As circumstances and context change, and as people develop their talents and abilities, we must allow our views to develop and change as well.  Failure to do so creates cynical, negative individuals unable to accept that their beliefs may no longer be accurate.  It is important therefore to allow those you care about move through their own evolution of thought.  Don’t try to persuade via force, but as you learn that context requires new thinking, do provide points of view and healthy debate.

I started this JAM stating my frustration over people I care about being unable to evolve.  For those I don’t care about, I do not spend time in frustration – I simply move on.

Action items:  Be sure your own beliefs and ways of thinking are evolving by exposing yourself to new ideas and learning.  Respectfully help those you care about evolve as well, and don’t waste time or energy with frustration over people who are stuck in their ways but who do not really matter to you.
