Using Your Talent for Good

Thursday December 17, 2015 #781

“Changing the world is good for those who want their names in books. But being happy, that is for those who write their names in the lives of others, and hold the hearts of others as the treasure most dear.”

~Orson Scott Card

If you have the talent and the drive to do things, even small things, that change the world for the better for individuals or larger groups, you have an obligation to bring your talent to work on these things. Those that do this are to be celebrated, and often the only reason some people do good things is for this acclimation.  That’s OK – as long as the result is people being helped.  However if that is the only reason someone makes that kind of effort, it is unlikely that they find joy and happiness.  However, those who do find that joy seem to be those who do good selflessly, without care for notice or fame.  So please, whether for the fame or just for the joy of doing good, act to use your talents to help our world be a bit better because you are in it.

Focusing on What Really Matters

Tuesday December 15, 2015 #780

“I know that the whole point—the only point—is to find the things that matter, and hold on to them, and fight for them, and refuse to let them go.”

~Lauren Oliver

We are halfway through the last month of 2015 and will be soon turning the page into a new year.  Traditionally, this is a time to pause and reflect on our lives, determine our satisfaction with our progress, and plan on how to create more positive impact in the New Year.  I sincerely hope you are going through this annual process and it will be even more effective if you do so more regularly.

As you reflect, it is likely that one or more areas of your life are not going the way you intended or desire.  The culprit may be that these areas are not truly important to you – and I mean truly important.  They may seem important but perhaps they are others’ priorities vs. your own.  Unless what you are aiming for is what really matters to you, it is unlikely that you will sustain the kind of energy and perseverance necessary to achieve success. Think this through fully and ensure as you reset for the New Year that your actions are directed to people, experiences and things that matter, truly matter to you.
