Wise Consumption

“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.”

Too much debt, from purchasing “things” we don’t need, in the misguided attempt to impress others or make ourselves feel better…  Now, this is not an indictment on consumerism or the accumulation of possessions, but rather a caution on over-consumption and the reasons for doing so.

The purchase of a wonderful gift for someone we love, or a beautifully crafted item for ourselves should not be viewed negatively.  These moments can and should bring joy and meaning to our lives and the people we love.

However, when consumption becomes habitual and a reaction to peer, societal, or marketing pressures, or causes crushing debt, we need to pause and consider the factors driving our purchasing.  It isn’t easy to say “no” to the forces driving our purchasing habits.  Easy credit just adds to it.  Be strong, be intentional.  Enjoy making purchases of desired objects and experiences that enhance your and your loved-ones’ lives.  Just be sure to exercise discretion and strive to spend within your means.
