Courage

Thursday June 22, 2017 #897

“Courage is seeing your fear in a realistic perspective, defining it, considering alternatives, and choosing to function in spite of risks.”

~Dr. Leonard Zunin

We all have fears that get in the way of our most desired personal and professional outcomes.  Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of pain, even fear of success, just to name a few.  Those who achieve despite their fears show real courage – the ability to recognize their fears and yet move forward in spite of them.  Don’t ignore or deny your fears.  Use them to sharpen your skills and your intent and push through with tenacity.

Moving Mountains

Tuesday June 20, 2017 #896

“The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”

~Chinese Proverb

How many times have you not attempted an arduous task that you know is necessary to achieve an important personal or professional goal?  Likely many, many times.  In the face of daunting challenges, our response is often unfortunately to give up.  Whether due to fear or lack of confidence, in giving up we miss the opportunity to achieve greatness.  The way through any obstacle or challenge is to first believe it is a worthwhile goal we are trying to achieve, and then to have the tenacity and the courage to keep at it despite the challenges attendant to any worthwhile goal.  Today’s quote reminds us that you need not tackle the entire challenge at once.  Rather, break it down into manageable pieces and chip away one stone at a time until you remove the mountain that is the challenge.

So, is your goal worthwhile and worth fighting for?  Then start removing the stones from your mountain!

Preparation for Life

Thursday June 8, 2017 #895

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

~Jimmy Dean

Carrying on from Tuesday’s JAM, I want to continue to impress upon you the importance of recognizing the ability you have in this moment to choose your reaction to your circumstances.  You will be forever buffeted with challenges and opportunities, some of your own making and most not.  Take the time to both recognize your ability to choose your attitude and reaction to the negative and positive inputs in your daily life, and the importance of training your mind to do so.

Think about a time when you were able to navigate a difficult situation and reflect on why you were able to do this.  Read any of a multitude of stories available in books and on the internet that tell of the thousands of people who successfully overcame challenges.  You will learn that most of these stories are based on a combination of preparation, continuous learning, tenacity and courage to act.

Prepare yourself for life.  There will always be surprises, both positive and negative.  Be ready to choose your reaction to be one of growth and learning vs. any number of negative reactions.

Choose Abundance

Tuesday June 6, 2017 #894

“If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you’ll never have enough.”

~Oprah Winfrey

Our power of perspective should not be underestimated.  Only we can determine our sense of satisfaction with our lives and what is in it.  Choosing a sense of abundance creates a life of gratitude, thankfulness, and the ability to give of ourselves to our families, communities, and workplaces.  Choosing a sense of scarcity creates a life of anger, depression, and the inability to do anything but wallow in our own pity and despondency, robbing our families, communities, and workplaces of our potential contributions.

Of course, everyone veers between these two extremes on a daily and even hourly basis.  The point is to be aware of how you perceive yourself and your circumstances in this moment, and then choose to step back and realize the abundance in your life.  This choice is critical to your ability to successfully navigate this life and achieve your potential.

How are you feeling right now? Choose your reaction wisely.  Choose abundance.
