Motivation to Start Your Day!

Thursday March 22, 2018 #954

“What is the most important thing you could be working on in the world right now? … And if you’re not working on that, why aren’t you?”

~Aaron Swartz

In today’s intense world, there are always intriguing things fighting for our attention and pulling us from what we know is the important thing we need to be doing right now. More than ever before, our ability to achieve our goals is tied to our ability to focus on those people and activities that will move us forward, vs. giving in to the many tempting but unproductive distractions.

Knowing the challenge in staying focused, it is important that we are clear on our goals, that these goals are truly meaningful, and that we work every day to remain true to our commitment to achieve them. A good habit is to begin every day thinking clearly about what we are planning to achieve, the tasks needed today to move forward, and acknowledging what may distract us. In naming both, we stand a better chance of persevering when the distractions hit.

Choose Hope and Optimism

Tuesday March 20, 2018 #953

“The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.”

~Marcel Pagnol

Even when we want to be hopeful and optimistic, the world around us tends to convince us that things are quite ugly. The past was somehow better (though you know objectively it was not), the present is horrific, and the future is unknown and scary….  Or is it? Today’s media leans to the negative and sensational, showing us horrific happenings locally and globally. Social media is mostly filled with either negative news or banalities. It is easy to get lost in this sea of negativity and boredom and begin to feel helpless to see positives or be hopeful.

While the negatives do exist, they remain a small percentage of reality. In fact, there are far more positives than negatives – they just aren’t as newsworthy or “likable” on social media. We can however be intentional in who we choose to be around, the social media we choose to engage in, and with how we get our news.

Choose hope and optimism, and intentionally seek other positive people and media sources to help you build on this and to insulate you from the negativity fighting for your attention.

Choose Better Over Bitter

Thursday March 15, 2018 #952

“You either get bitter or you get better. It’s that simple. You either take what has been dealt to you and allow it to make you a better person, or you allow it to tear you down. The choice does not belong to fate, it belongs to you.”

~Josh Shipp

There will always be challenges in life. Some caused by your own choices, some caused by circumstances beyond your control. Good things in life occur similarly. In all cases, our responsibility is to reflect on how we can use what happens in our lives, by us or to us, and become better for it. Those who choose to be grateful and make use of life’s lessons tend to be more successful, more joyful, and more content with living life. Those who choose bitterness tend to suffer the opposite, and merely exist.

Every day is an opportunity to learn to be better. Are you learning to be better or just existing? I suggest you learn.

Dealing With Doubts

Tuesday March 13, 2018 #951

“Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.”

~William Shakespeare

More often than not, we know the actions we must take which would allow us to achieve our goals both personally and professionally.  However, one key challenge often prohibits us from taking these actions: our own doubts. Doubts about our skills and abilities, our resources, our ability to overcome external challenges and internal fears, and even our worthiness cause us to avoid taking the actions we know will propel us forward.

These doubts may be externally or self-produced but are almost always severely overstated. The only truth is that failure to act is a guarantee for failure to achieve. Almost all doubts are exaggerated and can be overcome by the courage to act despite doubts and fears. The best news is that once you start taking action you will learn that most actions will be positive and even failure of a particular action will provide learning, enabling you to do better next time.

Show Up and Speak Up

Thursday March 8, 2018 #950

“The world will never discover a person who is hiding in the crowd.”

~Dr. Mardy Grothe

Don’t ever believe that your work will be noticed or that your skills will be obvious to anyone other than you. Similar, don’t assume that a person of interest to you will notice you simply because of your appearance or achievements. We likely overestimate what others see about us, good and bad. Others are just like you – thinking about their own situations, and not having time to think about yours.

If you want or need to be noticed personally or professionally, you must make yourself visible. Introduce yourself to people you would like to meet. Showcase your accomplishments to your bosses, factually and not boastfully. If you are looking for work, you must engage in professional discussions on LinkedIn and other platforms. And so on. The world truly will not discover you unless you show up and speak up.

The Process of Becoming

Tuesday March 6, 2018 #949

“The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them.”

~Jim Rohn

It is highly likely that for you to achieve anything of real worth, you will need to grow your skills, your experience and your relationships. In short, the person who achieves their significant goals is a different person than the one who set them. We grow in every way as we do the hard work it takes to achieve meaningful things. The sense of personal growth along that journey is where joy, satisfaction and happiness lie.  If we can realize that the journey therefore is perhaps more meaningful than the outcome, our ability to persevere through challenges will be significantly enhanced. Become the person who will achieve the goals you set for yourself!

The Best Way to Cheer Yourself Up

Thursday March 1, 2018 #948

“The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.”

~Mark Twain

The #1 most effective action you can talk when you are feeling down for any reason, is to put your concerns aside for a moment and seek out someone who could use someone to lean on. Provide that person with your time, your ear, and any assistance they could use to get them in a better place. This action of selflessness has been shown to improve your own sense of well-being, positivity and hopefulness.

Ideally, this is one to reflect on and absorb when you are feeling upbeat, enthusiastic and hopeful. It is harder to understand when you are feeling low.

Dream Big

Tuesday February 27, 2018 #947

“The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire; the size of your dream; and how you handle disappointment along the way”

~Robert Kiyosaki

If your desire is for significant success – be that in your job, your finances, your athletic pursuits, or your relationships, you must have significant goals paired with intense desire and perseverance. Small goals or a tepid level of passion will guarantee that any distraction or challenge will derail you. Don’t waste your energy on insignificant desires or goals. Put yourself out there with a consequential goal that ignites your passion and allows you to persevere and keep going when you confront the inevitable challenges.

What are your significant dreams?
