Finding Happiness

Thursday May 17, 2018 #970

“No one has a right to consume happiness without producing it.” ~

Helen Keller

This quote is quite provocative, with the inference that when we don’t actively work to make others happy, or to produce an environment conducive to producing joy and happiness, we have no right to happiness ourselves.

I believe this is true and that the best way to achieve a sense of contentment, joy and happiness is to provide these for others. This does not mean ignoring your own needs, but rather prioritizing the needs of those around you. When we focus on putting good stuff out into the world, we have less time for worrying about what we lack and we are filled with the joy that helping others brings us.

Find happiness by helping other find theirs.

Your Purpose-Driven Journey

Tuesday May 15, 2018 #969

“The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.”

~Benjamin Mays

Despite all the encouragement given through social media, literature and others to craft strong goals to provide us with strong direction in our lives, a large percentage of people actually operate with no clearly defined goals at all. They may exist on a very basic level of subsistence living: earning enough money to eat, pay the rent, and maybe burn the rest on various forms of entertainment. Even if they somehow manage to make a decent living, they rarely achieve much and blame others for their lack of achievement. This is a tragedy indeed.

Virtually everyone has the ability to improve their situation dramatically by developing a few meaningful goals in their personal and professional lives, and taking action daily to move towards achievement of those goals. I’m not here to judge those who don’t lead purposeful lives. But I do encourage everyone to examine your own situation and reflect on the goals you have (hopefully) set for yourself, and what actions you’re taking to achieve them.

Without goals, life is an aimless journey with likely less-than-optimum destinations possible. With goals, carefully crafted and aligned with your core values, life is a purpose-driven journey with optimum results likely.

What are your goals? What actions are you taking today to make progress?

Daring to Be Positively Contagious

Tuesday May 8, 2018 #967

“The joy in learning is partly that it enables me to teach.”

Dare to be ContagiousTM has always been the foundation philosophy of JAM with Mike, based on my belief that knowledge and wisdom are wasted if they are not shared. Unfortunately, too many interpret the phrase “knowledge is power” as though knowledge is something to be hoarded. Rather, we gain the most influence and attain the greatest rewards when we share our wisdom and knowledge freely.

Your value is most keenly felt when you create opportunities for others to benefit from your experience and learning. Not by droning on about your opinions, but by looking for ways to help others, willingly providing advice when asked, asking if you can provide help or guidance, teaching someone a skill, and even by sharing your thoughts on social media

By daring to be contagious with your talents and wisdom, you will add value to those around you in way you may never truly understand. I guarantee that if you treat your accumulated wisdom as a gift to be shared, vs a treasure to be hoarded, you will be rewarded in both wealth and psychological health.

Dare to be ContagiousTM today!

Own It!

Tuesday March 27, 2018 #955

“You can and inevitably will be surprised by your own ability. It is often not a question of ‘can’ you do it. The learning. The work. The achievement. It is instead a question of ‘will’ you.”

~Avery Regelman

It is a normal human reaction to look outside ourselves for the causes of our present condition, good or bad. We don’t naturally take responsibility for our challenges and though we may be outwardly boastful, we usually harbor doubts about our contribution to our positive achievements. The fact is that almost all circumstances, both failures and achievements are due to our own decisions and capabilities.

It is time to stop looking outward for blame or credit and look inwardly to both give credit to ourselves for our abilities and choices, as well as take responsibility for choices we make that cause failures and bad circumstances. Even when an outside cause creates a horrible situation, we can both determine our response as well as act to positively change our circumstances. Just own it!

Can you give yourself credit for good choices and take responsibility for poor ones? Of course! The real question though is will you?

What Our Choices Say About Us

Thursday May 3, 2018 #966

“It is our choices…that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

~J. K. Rowling

Talent and capabilities are a must for sustainable growth and success, and these should be cultivated throughout your life through ongoing education and experiences. However, even great natural and/or earned abilities are nothing without our willingness to make the choices that will move us forward. Of course, even doing nothing is a choice.

Where you find yourself now may or may not be directly related to choices you’ve made (though it likely is), but the choice you make now will determine where you go next and show who you really are. Choose to be someone who always moves forward, to sustain what is good and to change what is not serving you.

What have your choices shown about who you are? If you aren’t satisfied with the answer, the good news is you can make a choice right now to be the person you want to be.

Learn to Enjoy the Journey

Tuesday May 1, 2018 #965

“Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of travelling.”

~Margaret B. Runbeck

Our goal should never be “to be happy” because once we are feeling happy in a particular moment, life continues forward and that feeling will pass. Instead, we can choose to be conscious enough to be able to enjoy our moments of joy and happiness as they occur, knowing all moments and feelings end and the journey continues. Learning to find happiness in the journey is the key. Until death, each destination is momentary. The better we can enjoy the journey, with its moments of both joy and challenges, the better we can feel an overall sense of well-being.

Find happiness in your journey. Be well.

Don’t Waste Energy Getting Even

Thursday April 26, 2018 #964

“The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you.”

~John E. Southard

So much time and energy are wasted by so many on trying to “get even” for perceived slights by others. This is a tragic waste of talent. The only actions we should take to match the actions of another, is when we have been helped in some way. “Getting even” is then a beautiful thing.

If you are for any reason contemplating how you can get back at someone for something negative they did or did not do to you, STOP. Instead, spend your time reflecting first on that person’s situation that may have led them to a poor decision. How might you help? Forgive, provide any help you can, and move on to focusing on how you can help others.

How Passion Beats Resistance to Change

Tuesday April 24, 2018 #963

“The passion to change the world for the better is a more powerful force than the defense to keep it the same.”

~Simon Sinek

Sometimes we can get discouraged by how resistant our organizations and our communities are to change. People in general have a resistance to change, particularly when they feel threatened. We see this often in today’s fractured politics as mounting winds of social change threaten portions of the population who resist being changed and accepting change in others.

The very good news, in my view, is exemplified by today’s quote. The passion for change shown particularly by our youth, but increasingly by all generations, points to the positive evolution of our human condition to one in which all people are valued, education and opportunity are prioritized, and democracy strengthened by higher percentages of citizens voting.

This passion for positive change will overpower the normal human defense to hold onto past ideals. I am quite optimistic about our future and hope you share my optimism. The road of change is hard, but worth the effort!

Choose Gratitude

Thursday April 19, 2018 #962

“Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

~Melody Beattie

Much has been written on the power of living with an attitude of gratitude, being intentionally reflective and thankful for what we have and what we are able to experience, vs. fretting on what we lack or what others have that we do not.

And it bears repeating…  Reflect on your own circumstances and your primary beliefs about them. Where do you dwell on things you lack, or opportunities missed? Realistically look at these areas and challenge yourself on the accuracy of your perception. Even if true, can you let these things go and focus instead on all you do have and all you are able to experience?

Choose gratitude. It is an intentional and often difficult act, that when practiced, truly leads to a more satisfying and joyful life. Modeling a grateful attitude is one of the greatest gifts you can give your family, your organization and your other associations. We all need to experience more gratitude. Let’s start today with ourselves.

Move From Scarcity to Abundance

Tuesday April 17, 2018 #961

“When you have more than you need, build a longer table not a higher fence.”

We live our lives accumulating positive elements for ourselves. Friends and family, an education, a home, experiences, meaningful possessions, and if we are fortunate, wealth. Unfortunately, too many are caught up in accumulating long past our real needs, and then hoard against others who might “take” what we have.

However, true wealth is when we can realize when we have what we need and begin to build that “longer table” to share some of what we have been able to accumulate through our efforts and talents. Too few of us are living a life of giving due to an attitude of scarcity. When we have this attitude, there is never enough, and we build real and psychological walls around our hoarded possessions. When we have instead an attitude of abundance, we can begin to determine how to define what is enough.

I invite you to explore your own attitudes on scarcity and abundance. Begin to realize where you have enough and can begin to share with others. Your wealth and other excess possessions certainly, but perhaps most importantly, begin to share your knowledge, your experiences and your time.
