6 impossible things

Thursday January 14, 2010 #186

Sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

~Lewis Carroll

From long-time JAMmer HO, today’s quote reminds us not to take life too seriously.  Spend a bit of time everyday in a playful activity.  A little break from all the serious aspects of work and life will recharge your mental batteries and increase your effectiveness.

National Mudpack Day

Tuesday September 30, 2008 #70

“If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become unstable without knowing it.”

~Herdotus

As September ends and we reflect upon a complex political and financial world, it is good to take a break and look at a lighter subject.  It so happens that today is National Mudpack Day.  The entertaining website, www.holidayinsights.com, entertains us today with homage to a relaxation/beauty ritual.

National Mud Pack Day

When : September 30th

National Mud Pack Day is today. Pile on the facial. Ladies, this is your day. Guys, you can get a mud pack facial, too. Just don’t let your buddies know that you did!!

Mud packs were once the rage for facial treatments. It is still popular. But, the mud in facials has been replaced with a variety of other ingredients. It is supposed to keep the skin young, soft and supple. Does it work? Girls who use it, swear by it.

Celebrate today with a mud pack. Guys, make this a special day by buying a gift certificate for a facial for your special lady. Make sure to tell her its not that she needs it. Rather, it’s because it is comforting, and will make her feel good.

Tomorrow, you can return to the business of excelling in today’s complex world.  But today, enjoy a mudpack or any other enjoyable diversion. You deserve the break.

Rational Indulgence

Thursday May 6, 2008 #33

“People who are always taking care of their health are like misers who are hoarding a treasure which they have never spirit enough to enjoy.”

 ~Laurence Sterne

About once each month, I like to share fun holidays from Holiday Insights.  May 6th is home to two excellent holidays you simply must take advantage of:  National Beverage Day and International No Diet Day

From Holiday Insights:

Beverage Day is a chance to kick back with your favorite beverage and enjoy the day. The term “beverage” is broadly defined. So, were talking about celebrating all beverages today.   Beverage Day should be a day of pleasure and relaxation.  Grab a bottle, can, a glass, or a six-pack of your favorite beverage. Sit down in a comfortable chair….. indoors or out. Slowly sip and savor your drink. Life is good!

International No Diet Day encourages us to appreciate the bodies we have. You could consider it a “Big” backlash against becoming little (err thin), people. This day is intended for us to appreciate the body we have. It encourages us to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes……. and that’s okay.  International No Diet Day is a good opportunity to reassess and evaluate your weight management goals and perspective, and to make certain your efforts to be thin don’t come at a risk to your health. If you decide that continuing your diet is right for you, then use today to take a one day break.

Your assignment:  Go to a GREAT restaurant with a favorite companion; order a fun cocktail, an appetizer you’ve never tried, an incredible main course, and a nice bottle of wine.  Finish with the gooey chocolate dessert and a cappuccino or a glass of port.  YUM!!  I love May 6th!!!  While healthy pursuits are admirable, don’t forget once in awhile to indulge in the pleasures of a wonderful meal of delicious foods and drinks.

Optimistic Thoughts

Thursday April 24, 2008

“Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society.  The optimist invents the airplane and the pessimist the parachute.”

~Gil Stern

Optimism has been shown to be a key characteristic of successful, happy individuals.  Each individual has a different take on optimism.  The following thoughts on optimism are contributed by fellow JAMmer LP.  Enjoy!

You have heard the tired old adage of the glass that is either half empty or half full. George Carlin says it best, “The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.”

The definition of an optimist is someone who agrees with Voltaire, “This is the best of all possible worlds.”  A pessimist agrees.  (source unknown).

Thank you, LP, for your contribution.  Fellow JAMmers:  send in your stories, quotes, and anecdotes and they may be used in future JAMs!

April is National Humor Month – Celebrate!

Thursday April 10, 2008

“The man who doesn’t relax and hoot a few hoots voluntarily, now and then, is in great danger of hooting hoots and standing on his head for the edification of the pathologist and trained nurse, a little later on.”

~Elbert Hubbard

In the last JAM, I suggested taking a one-day holiday.  So, following my own advice, I am taking a break from the serious business of helping you find ways to take action.  Instead, let’s look at the recognized holidays for the month of April and the next couple of days.

(Yes, I know I took a break on April 1st too – you weren’t supposed to notice that!)

April is “Stress Awareness Month”, and “National Humor Month”, which certainly goes together perfectly, doesn’t it?

Your assignment:  Today and tomorrow, find ways to laugh out loud and reduce stress.  Here are two suggestions from Holiday Insights:

Today:  National Siblings Day

What a great way to celebrate national Humor Month!  Call your brother or sister (or someone in your life you regard as one) and share a joke, or laugh about a funny memory.

Tomorrow:  Barbershop Quartet Day

This can be a good way to both relieve stress and laugh too!  Try to find a local venue that has a barbershop quartet as the entertainment.  What a happy, carefree, way to pass some time.  Plus, these singers are usually incredibly talented.  You’ll be laughing about the experience for weeks to come.

Next JAM:  Action item #6 to help you “get up and get on with it.”

Use Humor to Break Through

Tuesday April 1, 2008 #23

“Humor is the affectionate communication of insight.”

~ Leo C. Rosten

In honor of April Fool’s Day, I will break from our series of action ideas to help you “get up and get on with it” – well, sort of.  As I began writing today’s JAM, I planned on sharing with you 6 quotes on humor.  I am still going to do that.  However, I realized that the use of humor can be one of the best tools we have to “get up and get on with it.”

With affection, I share with you the insight of today’s action item:  Use humor to break through

Your assignment:  Read through the 6 humor quotes (1 above and 5 below).  Ponder them a bit and find a way to use one or more of them to alter your thinking just enough to push yourself into action on one of your key goals.

For example:

I think the next best thing to solving a problem is finding some humor in it.” ~ Frank A. Clark

Action:  Determine an obstacle to taking action, find some humor in it, and break through!

Here are four more humor quotes.  Enjoy them, enjoy April Fool’s Day and…SMILE!

“Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humor to console him for what he is.” ~ Francis Bacon

“A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs — jolted by every pebble in the road.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher

“This I conceive to be the chemical function of humor: to change the character of our thought.” ~ Lin Yutang

“Humor is perhaps a sense of intellectual perspective: an awareness that some things are really important, others not; and that the two kinds are most oddly jumbled in everyday affairs.” ~ Christopher Morley

Jammin’ in the strangest places…

Tuesday, February 5, 2008   Issue #7

A little self-inflicted humor…

It is advised if you are a web author to set up “Google Alerts” for your site name to see how and if Google is finding your site.  You’re looking for others who might be using your title, how the site ranks, etc.  I checked my Alerts yesterday for “JAM with Mike” and here is what came up:

  • MySpace TV: Pearl Jam With Mike Tyler @ Hershey Stadium 7/12/03
  • A political blog: Joe Scarborough Sheds “Journalist” Role To Jam With Mike Huckabee At Political Rally
  • YouTube skateboard video: Pole jam with Mike Lind…
  • Pahrump Valley Times entertainment listing: One Man Band/Open Jam with Mike Hickey

I thought JAM with Mike was “a bit of positive nourishment to start your day.”  I didn’t realize I was rockin’ with Pearl Jam & Mike Huckabee, skateboarding, and entertaining at a bar in Pahrump…

Who knew?

Peanut Butter and Beer

 Thursday, January 24, 2008  Issue #4

Usually you’ll get inspiration and motivation with JAM with Mike, but I also promised to provide a bit of fun.  So, today I give you some fun trivia.

PB & J, anyone?

For those of you whose fond childhood memories include eating PB & J sandwiches, you will be happy to know that today is National Peanut Butter Day.  No, I’m serious.  There is a National Food Day for most days of the year, and today it’s Peanut Butter Day.

Note:  If you want to try some of the best peanut butter in the world, in a variety of incredible flavor-infused varieties, check out P.B.Loco at www.PBLoco.com.  You can thank me later!

Think about this when you watch the game this weekend.

If you enjoy a beer while watching the game, you might be interested to know that today is the anniversary of the invention of the beer can.  In 1935 the beer can (created by the American Can Co.) was introduced in Richmond, Virginia by the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company of Newark, New Jersey. The products were Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream Ale.

I do not recommend beer with your PB & J…
