Motivation to Start Your Day!

Inspired by Change

Tuesday August 4, 2015 #746

“You can look for external sources of motivation and that can catalyze a change, but it won’t sustain one. It has to be from an internal desire.”

~Jillian Michaels

This week my family and I have made our move to Hawaii.  This has been a major change for me professionally and for me and my family personally.  We have loved Hong Kong so I found myself on a journey to become motivated about the move.  It was only when I stopped looking externally for motivation and spent time reflecting on the professional opportunity and the personal advantages that I finally got excited!  Luckily I have been in the “excited” phase for quite a while now so the move has been energizing and I am thrilled to launch this next chapter.  (You’re probably wondering how moving to Hawaii was ever not an exciting proposition – that story for another day!)

What changes are you facing?  Are you wasting your time looking outside for sources of motivation?  Try looking inside and find how you can make the decision to embrace the change and get inspired about it.

Be Curious

Tuesday July 7, 2015 #738

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

~Walt Disney

Often times when you find yourself in a rut, the culprit is a loss of curiosity.  The same curiosity that drove us as children to explore new territory, to read and learn, to meet new people, and to try new things is what we need as adults to keep us inspired, interested, and moving forward.  I believe we need to actively engage our curiosity by reading and learning about new ideas and topics, traveling to new places near or far, meeting new people – especially those who challenge our thinking, and developing new skills.  These actions not only energize us, they create a habit of curiosity which helps us renew and inspire us throughout our lives.  Be curious.

Choosing the Positive

Tuesday May 12, 2015 #724

“Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight.”

~Benjamin Franklin

Too many live in dread of what could go wrong in their lives.  Those who tend to this way of thinking are not helped by the endless stream of negative news on the intranet, the TV, and even from family and friends.  Even generally positive people can be impacted by this barrage.  You do, however, have the power to ignore most of this and pay attention to positive individuals and stories.  That same intranet is also filled with countless sites devoted to positive stories and news.  You just have to go looking – they don’t get the attention of a public conditioned to look for and find negativity everywhere. Make the effort to surround yourself with positive people (they are all around you if you pay attention!) and make a personal commitment to turn off the negativity on popular media and seek instead the many sources of positive and inspiring people and news.  Focus on the positive and you will most likely find it.  Focus on the negative and you will likely find that as well.  It is truly your choice the vast majority of the time.

Living the Adventure

Tuesday October 7, 2014 #668

Never forget that life can only be nobly inspired and rightly lived if you take it bravely and gallantly, as a splendid adventure in which you are setting out into an unknown country, to meet many a joy, to find many a comrade, to win and lose many a battle.”

~Annie Besant

Often people don’t like to admit it, but it is true:  the only life worth living is the one that challenges who and what you are.  It can’t and shouldn’t be always easy and carefree.  It is only through struggle, challenges, loss, and grief, that we can find and appreciate joy, love, fulfillment, success and peace.  We don’t do this by playing it safe or hiding from life.  Rather, we must embrace all of life fully – the good and the challenging, learn from our experiences, share our knowledge and gifts, and reflect on all we have.  Life is a great adventure – but only if you live it!

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”

~Zig Zigler

You know and enjoy those times of inspiration and motivation when you listen to a gifted speaker, read a great book or article, experience a special moment, etc.  But that feeling often doesn’t last.  The key to maximizing our potential is to be in a highly motivated state as often as possible.  This is achieved through repeated activities that motivate us, and more importantly, to open ourselves to the potential for any moment to be inspiring.  Don’t wait for the big moments, and make no excuses.  Motivation lies within our recognition in the inspiring power of intentional daily activities.

Inspiring Excellence

Tuesday August 19, 2014 #654

“We are going to relentlessly pursue perfection knowing full well it is unobtainable, because in that relentless pursuit of perfection, we will achieve excellence.”

~Vince Lombardi

I have long admired and tried to emulate people who are positive, inspirational and always seem to drive toward seemingly unattainable goals.  It is this combination of positivity and relentless drive to achieve the unachievable that I find so attractive.  You just can’t help believing in the mission and wanting to be a part of achieving their inspirational goal – even if it appears crazy.  By creating this environment, they almost always achieve more than if their goal was “realistic”.

There is the flip side:  the negative or nasty person who also is trying to push for the impossible – but since their approach is mean-spirited, they become repulsive and only lead by fear or intimidation.  They may achieve a few wins, but in the long term they lose.

Choose to be the positive person who creates the environment to achieve great things together – even the “impossible”!

Working for Inspiration

Tuesday August 12, 2014 #652

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”

~Pablo Picasso

To thrive in today’s increasingly complex and fast-paced world, creativity and innovation become foundational competencies.  To develop these and maximize your potential, you must be actively working on learning and applying your knowledge daily.  Learning isn’t enough.  Inspiration doesn’t come readily by standing still.  Application, execution, and then reflection must occur regularly.  As you do so, and if you keep all your senses open, inspiration will strike.  Get going and get inspired!

“Doing doesn’t come from inspiration, inspiration comes from doing.” ~Billy Cox

Many people spend their lives searching for the inspiration they need to finally do the thing they dream of most.  Sadly, most of these people will never find it.  Don’t be one of them.  Start doing the thing you dream of.  NOW.  It is only in the doing that you will find your inspiration.

A Worthy Purpose

Thursday February 6, 2014 #600

If you would find happiness and joy, lose your life in some noble cause. A worthy purpose must be at the center of every worthy life.

~Jack H. Goaslind, Jr.

As human beings, we all want to feel that what we are working towards and fighting for is something of meaning. Our hard work, and even achievement, rings hollow when unaccompanied by a meaningful purpose or cause.  If you find yourself lacking enthusiasm for your work, or see this in your people, try to redefine your work as being in the service of a real and meaningful purpose.  If you can’t, you may need to consider a change.  If you can authentically attach a purpose to your work, you will find joy and even happiness in the work to achieve it.

This is JAM #600 – I keep going after 6 years due to my purpose:  Helping people find theirs.  Thank you for always inspiring me to continue my quest to help individuals, teams and organizations bring their best to what they do every day.

A Tribute to Nelson Mandela

Tuesday December 10, 2013 #583

“There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

~Nelson Mandela

The world lost a great man on December 5th, 2013 when Nelson Mandela passed away.  There are few individuals with his name recognition and impact.  He affected not only his own country, but the attitudes and aspirations of millions.  As I reflect on his many deeds and statements, this quote resonates greatly.  While most of us cannot conceive of living such a life of impact and meaning, all of us are capable of living to our own potential.

In honor of this great man’s life, may we all find our own voice and the courage to utilize our gifts to their utmost, making a difference for the people in our lives.
