Personal Responsibility

Tuesday July 21, 2015 #742

“At the end of the day, you are solely responsible for your success and your failure. And the sooner you realize that, you accept that, and integrate that into your work ethic, you will start being successful. As long as you blame others for the reason you aren’t where you want to be, you will always be a failure.”

~Erin Cummings

Man on top of mountain. Conceptual design.

We truly are in control of our lives.  Even when things happen out of your control – good or bad, you can choose how to deal with that event, and to choose your attitude and response. Instead of complaining about the boss, the company, the politicians, the economy, your partner, your parents, or anyone/anything else, use your energy to decide what YOU will do to enhance or change your situation. There are countless stories of individuals who have overcome far more than what you are likely facing due to their perseverance, hope, and refusal to give up control of their lives to any circumstance or person.  If you are feeling out of control and/or in blaming mode, STOP.  Choose the path of personal responsibility and control your own life.

Leadership

Thursday April 2, 2015 #713

Leaders aren’t born, they are made. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal which is worthwhile.”

~Vince Lombardi

Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi, 1961 NFL Championship

Yes, for some, leadership comes more naturally than others due to innate intelligence, charisma, and confidence.  However, sustainable success as a leader requires not only some level of these talents, but also the exceptional drive, motivation and perseverance required to push through inevitable challenges.  Even someone with limited charisma and confidence, and average intelligence, can rise to effective leadership success if they are willing and able to fight through obstacles and failures with determination and grit.  And highly intelligent and charismatic individuals often fail to lead due to laziness and hubris.  Regardless of your level of talent, if given the opportunity to lead, focus on your character and drive and you can be the leader you are capable of and that your people need.

Conquering Fears

Sunday November 16, 2014 #678

“They can conquer who believe they can. He has not learned the first lesson is life who does not every day surmount a fear.”

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Everyone has fears.  Those who appear fearless have merely learned to face and conquer their fears through tenacious action and a stubborn belief in their own ability to persevere.  This ability is learned and only gained through experience and will.  Don’t think you need to do this alone.  Share your fears with those you care about and enlist their help and guidance in your quest to accomplish your goals and purpose.  Get out there and push through the challenges of the day and gain the experience that will serve you well through the normal messiness of life.

Overcoming Obstacles

Tuesday November 11, 2014 #677

“History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heart-breaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.”

~B.C. Forbes

At some point in your life you will be confronted with tragedy and loss, maybe several times.  Our ability to experience and then move beyond these challenges is a uniquely human trait that we all possess, but must have the will to utilize.  Perhaps more challenging than these major events are the thousands of little struggles we face each and every day.  That same will must come into play to avoid getting discouraged by the daily annoyances we encounter.  So whether to handle the small annoyance or the major tragedy, our will to not only survive, but thrive, is key.  We can and will find this internal strength both through intentional action, as well as surrounding ourselves with positive and tenacious people who love us.

Evolving Ideas

Tuesday October 28, 2014 #673

“The difference between perseverance and obstinacy is, that one often comes from a strong will, and the other from a strong won’t.”

~H.W. Beecher

673

The most frustrating people for me are those I care about who are unable or unwilling to consider views other than their own.  The world is forever evolving and this is particularly true for people and circumstances.  As circumstances and context change, and as people develop their talents and abilities, we must allow our views to develop and change as well.  Failure to do so creates cynical, negative individuals unable to accept that their beliefs may no longer be accurate.  It is important therefore to allow those you care about move through their own evolution of thought.  Don’t try to persuade via force, but as you learn that context requires new thinking, do provide points of view and healthy debate.

I started this JAM stating my frustration over people I care about being unable to evolve.  For those I don’t care about, I do not spend time in frustration – I simply move on.

Action items:  Be sure your own beliefs and ways of thinking are evolving by exposing yourself to new ideas and learning.  Respectfully help those you care about evolve as well, and don’t waste time or energy with frustration over people who are stuck in their ways but who do not really matter to you.

Exceeding our Limitations

Thursday September 18, 2014 #663

“The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner.”

~Gordon B. Hinckley

I am energized by the possibility in all people to achieve great things.  The joy of leadership is to provide the environment in which anyone can exceed their perceived limitations and deliver exceptional results for themselves and for their teams.  This environment must be one of optimism, a clear purpose, mutual trust and respect, hard work and perseverance.  In this environment, all members contribute at a high level, rather than relying on a few stars.  Each of us, whether as a titled leader, or a leader among our peers, can create and preserve such an environment.  And in today’s complex and highly competitive environment, we must.

Looking Inside

Tuesday September 16, 2014 #662

“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”

~Carl Jung

looking at city

People work hard every day, searching for meaning, success, wealth, happiness, and love.  Too many never seem to find these things because they are searching for them “out there”.  Somehow if they try hard enough, they believe they will find the elusive things they seek.  I have found that those who seem most at peace with their lives are those who have spent time with themselves, determined their core principles and what is most important, and then lived a life in accordance with these principles.  In this way, the people and experiences that bring fulfillment and all life’s abundance come to them – still requiring great effort and perseverance, but far more naturally.  Look inside, find yourself.
