You Can!

Tuesday May 26, 2015 #728

“Nothing has ever been achieved by the person who says, ‘It can’t be done.’”

~Eleanor Roosevelt

728

The first step to achieving anything worthwhile is to take action.  The only certain path to failure is never starting, which usually is combined with a certainty that “it can’t be done”.  If what you want to achieve is worthwhile, begin with taking an action – even a small one – and you may surprise yourself at what is possible.  You needn’t be sure of success to start, but never believe success is impossible or taking any action will likely be impossible.  Act, and you can then determine if you believe.

Change

Tuesday May 6, 2014 #624

“We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction.” ~Bill Gates

624

Whether changing ourselves, or preparing for changes around us, we do indeed overestimate what can and will change in the short term.  And we typically fail to recognize and prepare for the significant changes that will occur in the longer term.  To battle this tendency, be curious:  study history, listen to experts who attempt to predict future changes, and come to your own conclusions.  Based on your learning, take actions that can best prepare you for the future possibilities.  While predicting the future is haphazard at best, you must make the attempt so that you are less likely to be caught unawares when inevitable changes occur.

The Lenses We Wear

Thursday March 6, 2014 #607

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”

~Henry David Thoreau

lenses

We all know the “glass half-full” and “glass half-empty” comparison of optimists and pessimists.  However, the power of this simple observation should not be underestimated.  It goes beyond the desirability of a positive outlook.  The very nature of how all aspects of life are perceived is shaped by the lenses we choose to wear.  And yes, it is a choice.  Wearing the lenses of hopefulness, positivity, gratitude, and potential, everything – people, objects, and the world around us – is imbued with possibility and beauty.  The very same things when viewed through the lenses of hopelessness, negativity, and thanklessness show us only impossibility and ugliness.  Make the choice today to wear the lenses that allow you to see the beauty in the world and in yourself.  It will make all the difference.

The Joy of Connection

Thursday October 24, 2013 #570

“Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition.”

 ~Alexander Smith

seeing love

It is an amazing feeling to experience those moments of connection with another human being.  It could be your child, a friend, a co-worker, a lover, or someone you’ve just met.  That feeling comes from the realization that this person reflects back to you something you want to be, and are.  And when we see it, we rejoice in the connection.  Keep your senses open for this possibility in the people you come in contact with and you will probably discover just how many people you can connect with on this level.

Breaking Free

Thursday October 17, 2013 #568

“The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.”

~Mark Caine

breaking-free

You have the power to overcome all but the most daunting circumstances.  Your foundational belief on life’s potential determines the limit to your power.  Do you view your potential and the potential of those around you from a paradigm of scarcity or abundance? I challenge you to see the world as a place of abundant opportunity, talent, and possibility – which it is.  From this perspective, your current circumstances can be viewed for what they are:  A temporary situation.  Each moment has within it the spark of possibility – for you to take small or large actions to change your current circumstances to your liking and betterment.

Determine where you are headed, decide to succeed, and then do what you must to move in the direction of success no matter the current environment.  It is a world of abundance.  Use your power to create your path to success.

The passion for potential

Tuesday May 7, 2013 #521

“If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of potential — for the eye which, ever young and ardent, sees the possible.”

~Soren Kierkegaard

It is a true gift to be able to see the possible in every person, and situation.  Too often we focus on limitations and obstacles rather than potential solutions and the possibilities of positive outcomes.  This is due to our very human fears and desire to avoid pain.  To battle this, we must focus intentionally on our ability to choose our thoughts and while recognizing our fears, push beyond them with courage – enabling us to see the potential and take action to move towards it.  With this ability, wealth and power will come naturally.  Like anything, this is a skill that grows with practice.  Start now.

Endless possibilities

Thursday April 4, 2013 #512

“Now is the time. Needs are great, but your possibilities are greater.”

~Bill Blackman

The challenges of our time are numerous.  The challenges in your own life are no doubt significant as well.  The good news?  You, and our society, have everything needed to win against these challenges.  The decision to win is all that is lacking.  We must stop our negative thinking and our mentality of scarcity, and replace these with belief in our potential, in abundance, and the endless possibilities for positive change.  If each of us can make the decision to win, the multiplier effect from your influence will make positive changes in your sphere of influence, and that of the people in your circle.  Decide now.

Matching your talent and passion

Thursday October 11, 2012 #462

“When love and skill work together expect a masterpiece.”

~John Ruskin

We’ve all seen this – the otherwise talented person who doesn’t perform to their potential.  It could be you.  Why does this happen?  More often than not, the person’s profession or sport or other activity is not where their passions lie.  Talent can get you far, but only talent combined with passion creates excellence.   Ideally, you will find a career that you have great talent for and which you love passionately.  Even if it is only a hobby, matching your talent and passion will maximize not only your potential, but your happiness as well.

An Optimistic Challenge

Tuesday August 21, 2012 #447

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”

~Joy J. Golliver

Regular JAMmer, CJ, sent me this quote along with the video link below to the 2012 Wellesley High School commencement speech.  Her thoughts resonated with me, and I share them now with you:

I am compelled to share this with you, also because I found lot of controversy in the press around this speech.

For some reason, the speech for me is very inspiring and more of an optimistic challenge. In a way, the professor is urging us to be passionate learners with ambitious, creative and agile mindsets. As the world is changing, so must our ongoing learning mechanism.

There couldn’t have been a better time for me to listen to this speech since my MBA program is nearing its end and I am gearing up to return to my work life. “Today is just a beginning….it’s where I go from here that matters.”

Speech excerpts: “Dream big. Work hard. Think for yourself. Love everything you love, everyone you love, with all your might. And do so, please, with a sense of urgency, for every tick of the clock subtracts from fewer and fewer….You’re not special, because everyone is…Make for yourselves, please for your sake and ours, extraordinary lives.”

I, deeply, wish this for you.

“Dare to be Contagious!”™

Tuesday June 12, 2012 #427

“With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.”

~Max Ehrmann

It is easy to get lost in the negative inputs coming from popular media, as well as from co-workers, friends and family. So many challenges out there – real and imagined. I argue, however, that there is far more beauty and wonder in the world than these negative inputs would imply and that it is our obligation to notice, be open to, have gratitude for, and most importantly share all the positives in the world.

In that spirit, I share with you this beautiful 1927 prose poem by American writer Max Ehrmann (1872-1945). Today’s quote and the full Desiderata were in that same spirit shared with me by JAMmer CJ.  Enjoy…

Desiderata – by Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

If this impacted you positively, please do your friends and family the favor of sharing the Desiderata with them. As I always say, “Dare to be Contagious!”™
