The Journey to Success

Thursday August 20, 2015 #751

“The elevator to success is out of order. You’ll have to use the stairs…One step at a time.”

~Joe Girard

Whenever you are feeling beaten down by the challenges that life throws at you, and you want to scream out your frustration on things not being easier, remember this quote.  There truly is no easy path to worthwhile and satisfying success.  There are always long paths to go down, detours to take, and obstacles to overcome.  Revel in each step you take that brings you closer to your next milestone and try to be both pragmatic in the face of each challenge, and also conscious of the many small moments of joy and comradery, as well as the occasional big spurts of progress that are also a part of the journey.

Grow Your Capacity to Give

Thursday August 13, 2015 #749

“The very best thing you can do for the whole world is to make the most of yourself.”

~Wallace Wattles

Giving of your time, wealth and resources to others is exceptionally rewarding and I believe a social and moral imperative.  However, you must never cease building your resources – physical, financial, emotional.  It is only through continuing to make the most of yourself that your resources, and therefore your capacity to give, continue to grow.  Never stop learning, never stop innovating, never stop finding new ways to solve old and new problems.  You are key to the success of those around you – keep pushing yourself and those you lead to create value and resources that can help ever more people succeed along with you.

Personal Responsibility

Tuesday July 21, 2015 #742

“At the end of the day, you are solely responsible for your success and your failure. And the sooner you realize that, you accept that, and integrate that into your work ethic, you will start being successful. As long as you blame others for the reason you aren’t where you want to be, you will always be a failure.”

~Erin Cummings

Man on top of mountain. Conceptual design.

We truly are in control of our lives.  Even when things happen out of your control – good or bad, you can choose how to deal with that event, and to choose your attitude and response. Instead of complaining about the boss, the company, the politicians, the economy, your partner, your parents, or anyone/anything else, use your energy to decide what YOU will do to enhance or change your situation. There are countless stories of individuals who have overcome far more than what you are likely facing due to their perseverance, hope, and refusal to give up control of their lives to any circumstance or person.  If you are feeling out of control and/or in blaming mode, STOP.  Choose the path of personal responsibility and control your own life.

Success Through Humility

Thursday July 16, 2015 #741

“Humility is the true key to success. Successful people lose their way at times. They often embrace and overindulge from the fruits of success. Humility halts this arrogance and self-indulging trap. Humble people share the credit and wealth, remaining focused and hungry to continue the journey of success.”

~Rick Pitino

No matter what successes you achieve, never lose your humility.  The only thing certain about success is that it is fleeting.  What brought success today will likely not work again tomorrow.  Stay hungry, stay humble.  Never stop learning.

Hope & Confidence

Tuesday June 23, 2015 #734

“Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs:  The future can be better than the present.  And I have the power to make it so.”

~David Brooks

Hope and confidence.  Two powerful and required tools of the successful and the soon-to-be successful person.  Even when not completely warranted, successful people virtually always possess hope and confidence.  These two factors drive them through challenges and obstacles, and inspire them to develop skills, nurture relationships and gain knowledge they’ll need to create the success they desire.

The Secret of Success

Tuesday June 16, 2015 #732

“The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes.”

~Benjamin Disraeli

How can you find success?

  • Determine what success means to you. Not to anyone else, just you. Otherwise, any success achieved may feel hollow because it was someone else’s definition of success.  Update your definition regularly.
  • Understand what you’ll need to succeed – skills, knowledge, experience, associations, etc.
  • Take action repeatedly to gain what you need and to be where you’ll need to be when opportunities arise.
  • Have the awareness to see it, the courage to go for it, and the tenacity to keep going for it again and again – because not every opportunity will bring you the success you desire, nor will any single success bring lifetime happiness

You Can!

Tuesday May 26, 2015 #728

“Nothing has ever been achieved by the person who says, ‘It can’t be done.’”

~Eleanor Roosevelt

The first step to achieving anything worthwhile is to take action.  The only certain path to failure is never starting, which usually is combined with a certainty that “it can’t be done”.  If what you want to achieve is worthwhile, begin with taking an action – even a small one – and you may surprise yourself at what is possible.  You needn’t be sure of success to start, but never believe success is impossible or taking any action will likely be impossible.  Act, and you can then determine if you believe.

Being a Person of Value

Thursday April 30, 2015 #721

“Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.”

~Albert Einstein

create value - inpiration concept - isolated words in vintage letterpress wood type

Any study of people who enjoy sustained success shows these people have a core competency in adding value to the people around them and the activities in which they engage.  Think about how or if you are adding value to the people and activities you engage in today.  How can you add more value?  Who can you help?  How can your unique talents and passions add value to the projects you are assigned to or lead?  Push yourself today to add a little more value vs. looking for how you will gain.

“Oftentimes the thing that makes the difference between a good student and a poor one, a good learner or a bored human being, is just a little curiosity. If you have it, cultivate it, feed it. Never let it go. If you do not have it – get it. Wonder, watch, ask questions, be alive. It’s just that simple”

~Marjorie Pay Hinckley

The difference between sustainable, recurring success and a pattern of failure often comes down to a question of curiosity.  Spend a little time today in critical reflection of your own thought patterns, habits and behaviors.  Do you accept information and decisions at face value, or do you ask questions and clarify intent?  Do you hold on to your opinions and beliefs long after the basis of these have been refuted or challenged?  Or do you allow your beliefs to evolve through an ongoing habit of questioning, reading, listening, and learning?  It is your choice.  You can be stuck in a pattern of mediocrity and even ongoing failure, or you can take control of your destiny through critical thinking, intelligent inquiry, and flexibility to change and evolve.  Be curious!

Leaders aren’t born, they are made. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal which is worthwhile.”

~Vince Lombardi

Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi, 1961 NFL Championship

Yes, for some, leadership comes more naturally than others due to innate intelligence, charisma, and confidence.  However, sustainable success as a leader requires not only some level of these talents, but also the exceptional drive, motivation and perseverance required to push through inevitable challenges.  Even someone with limited charisma and confidence, and average intelligence, can rise to effective leadership success if they are willing and able to fight through obstacles and failures with determination and grit.  And highly intelligent and charismatic individuals often fail to lead due to laziness and hubris.  Regardless of your level of talent, if given the opportunity to lead, focus on your character and drive and you can be the leader you are capable of and that your people need.
