The Journey to Success

Thursday August 20, 2015 #751

“The elevator to success is out of order. You’ll have to use the stairs…One step at a time.”

~Joe Girard

751

Whenever you are feeling beaten down by the challenges that life throws at you, and you want to scream out your frustration on things not being easier, remember this quote.  There truly is no easy path to worthwhile and satisfying success.  There are always long paths to go down, detours to take, and obstacles to overcome.  Revel in each step you take that brings you closer to your next milestone and try to be both pragmatic in the face of each challenge, and also conscious of the many small moments of joy and comradery, as well as the occasional big spurts of progress that are also a part of the journey.

Moving Beyond Your Comfort Zone

Tuesday July 28, 2015 #744

“The comfort zone is the great enemy to creativity; moving beyond it necessitates intuition, which in turn configures new perspectives and conquers fears.”

~Dan Stevens

744

Intuition is the art of using all your experience and knowledge and applying it in a new and unclear situation.  If you don’t stretch yourself beyond your habitual methods, if you stay in your comfort zone, you will likely fail or at best achieve mediocrity.  Instead, use your power of intuition to imagine new ideas and unique scenarios to creatively move through challenges and maximize opportunities.

The Decision to Act

Thursday July 23, 2015 #743

“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.”

~Amelia Earhart

743

You probably know this from your own experience:  The real challenges in life aren’t the challenges themselves.  It is the difficulty of making that decision to act to make a change that can get you beyond that challenge.  Once the decision is made and that first action is taken, it is almost always a pleasant surprise just how easy it is to take the next and the next action until the challenge is overcome.  It is human nature to fear the unknown, but it is also our unique human ability to decide to move beyond our fears and take action.  What is challenging you today?  What could you do if you weren’t afraid to act?  Now, decide and act.

Hope & Confidence

Tuesday June 23, 2015 #734

“Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs:  The future can be better than the present.  And I have the power to make it so.”

~David Brooks

734

Hope and confidence.  Two powerful and required tools of the successful and the soon-to-be successful person.  Even when not completely warranted, successful people virtually always possess hope and confidence.  These two factors drive them through challenges and obstacles, and inspire them to develop skills, nurture relationships and gain knowledge they’ll need to create the success they desire.

Begin Where You Are

Tuesday June 2, 2015 #730

“Don’t let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was.”

~Richard L. Evans

Businesswoman with intense stress and painful headache. Woman in job problems.

It is easy and common to allow yourself to become overwhelmed and discouraged by the challenges and obstacles this life throws at us.  Or to be envious of people who seem to have what we want:  health, wealth, happiness.  If you find yourself feeling this way, I implore you to accept the fact that these people – almost without exception – began just like you:  with frustrations and challenges to overcome.  And you can do just what they did:  decide what you want and take action to improve your situation.  Achievement must always be preceded by a decision and an action.  What are you waiting for?

Changing Your Mind

Thursday May 7, 2015 #723

“The foolish and the dead never change their opinions.”

~James Russell Lowell

723

In this constantly evolving world in which we live, we must have the character strength to allow new information and changing circumstances to challenge our opinions and beliefs.  Your position needn’t change, but by not listening and at least considering your opinions through critical thinking, you are robbing yourself the opportunity to learn, grow and adapt.

Be Kind to Yourself

Tuesday April 21, 2015 #718

“I found in my research that the biggest reason people aren’t more self-compassionate is that they are afraid they’ll become self-indulgent.  They believe that self-criticism is what keeps them in line.  Most people have gotten in wrong because our culture says being hard on yourself is the way to be.”

~Dr. Kristin Neff

Today’s JAM is a guest post by JAMmer LB.  He provides an interesting insight into the need to be kind to ourselves as we navigate the challenges of life.

Indulgence is a virtue that goes well beyond the field of management. In a business world in quicker and constant change, managers and leaders are asked to take more risks and make quicker decisions, which can lead to more mistakes, and sometimes self-discontent or frustration.

Indulgence towards others is a cardinal value, but indulgence towards oneself is a trait that high-demanding professionals may sometimes overlook.

Failure is a component of success and every day is an opportunity to get better. Indulgence towards oneself is not about being complacent; it is just about applying life lessons with a bit more kindness.

How to Enjoy Life

Tuesday April 7, 2015 #714

“The trick is to enjoy life. Don’t wish away your days, waiting for better ones ahead.”

~Marjorie Pay Hinckley

714

We overcomplicate our lives.  We search endlessly for techniques to “find” happiness, when the reality that happiness is a decision.  No one has everything they want and no one ever will.  We all have challenges, unfair occurrences, losses, and frustrations.  The question not about avoiding these things, it is a matter of deciding how we’ll react.  Life is not fair or unfair.  It simply “is”.  Choose to enjoy life, accept the challenges and notice and celebrate the everyday small positives that are your path to joy.

Leadership

Thursday April 2, 2015 #713

Leaders aren’t born, they are made. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal which is worthwhile.”

~Vince Lombardi

Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi, 1961 NFL Championship

Yes, for some, leadership comes more naturally than others due to innate intelligence, charisma, and confidence.  However, sustainable success as a leader requires not only some level of these talents, but also the exceptional drive, motivation and perseverance required to push through inevitable challenges.  Even someone with limited charisma and confidence, and average intelligence, can rise to effective leadership success if they are willing and able to fight through obstacles and failures with determination and grit.  And highly intelligent and charismatic individuals often fail to lead due to laziness and hubris.  Regardless of your level of talent, if given the opportunity to lead, focus on your character and drive and you can be the leader you are capable of and that your people need.

The Benefits of Failure

Tuesday March 3, 2015 #704

“Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.”

~Dalai Lama

704

No matter your skills and capabilities, or your well-laid plans, you can never avoid all failures.  And that’s OK.  In fact, never having a serious failure is counter to reaching the levels of success you are capable of.  It is only through the growth you will experience while navigating challenges and learning from failures that you will reach your potential.  So don’t fret when you face hardships and even fail.  Just be sure to recognize and take advantage of their learning and growth potential.
