Today is the Day to Live

Tuesday April 14, 2015 #716

“There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.”

~Dalai Lama

716

How often do you find yourself spending time either focused on the glories or painful memories of the past or fears or dreams of the future?  While there can be great value in positive memories or past learning, as well as in imagining the future we desire, for most people time spent in the past and future occupy far more of our attention than they deserve.  In this day, in this moment, lie your power to use the lessons of the past to take the actions necessary to achieve your future ambitions.  Focus most of your energy on taking action now, and fully experiencing the potential of today, and you will find you can truly live.

Your Life

Tuesday March 10, 2015 #706

“We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the life that is waiting for us.”

~Joseph Campbell

706

Not always, but often, our true path lies in a direction we had never envisioned.  The moment of recognition may come as a shock as you realize that your purpose, and your path to real joy and ultimately success, requires letting go of what you and others expected of yourself.  It’s the career person who realizes they must become an entrepreneur.  It is the financier who recognizes their true passion is in charitable works.  Or a million other less dramatic choices.  What is your true purpose, your true passion? Is your current life fulfilling your potential?  Alignment to your gifts and passions will create true joy and contentment.

The Benefits of Failure

Tuesday March 3, 2015 #704

“Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.”

~Dalai Lama

704

No matter your skills and capabilities, or your well-laid plans, you can never avoid all failures.  And that’s OK.  In fact, never having a serious failure is counter to reaching the levels of success you are capable of.  It is only through the growth you will experience while navigating challenges and learning from failures that you will reach your potential.  So don’t fret when you face hardships and even fail.  Just be sure to recognize and take advantage of their learning and growth potential.

Happy New Year!

Thursday January 1, 2015 #692

“New Year’s Day. A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery. Today carve out a quiet interlude for yourself in which to dream, pen in hand. Only dreams give birth to change.”

~Sarah Ban Breathnach

692

On this New Year’s Day, I wish for you a year of significant, if not dramatic growth for yourself and all that you hold dear in your professional and personal life.  That growth will not come without purposeful and persistent action on your part.  Don’t wait for good things to come to your door!  Get out in the world and push yourself forward to the amazing potential that is within you.  Perhaps more importantly, be intentional about helping others accelerate their own growth.  You have amazing talents and gifts that if shared, will give others hope, challenge their thinking, and spread the potential for improved circumstances across your family, community, and workplace.

My best to you and yours as you launch your best year ever!

Bits of Pleasure & Beauty

Thursday December 4, 2014 #684

“You’ll never find a rainbow if you’re looking down!”

~Charlie Chaplin

684

It is important to focus and put in the hard work necessary to achieve and contribute to our potential.  However, it is also important to give ourselves a few breaks to allow reflection, and to give us time to enjoy and learn from our co-workers, friends and family.  In our intense busyness, we miss not only rainbows but thousands of other bits of pleasure and beauty all around us.  By all means, work hard.  But not so hard that you miss out on life.

Motivation

Thursday August 28, 2014 #657

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”

~Zig Zigler

657

You know and enjoy those times of inspiration and motivation when you listen to a gifted speaker, read a great book or article, experience a special moment, etc.  But that feeling often doesn’t last.  The key to maximizing our potential is to be in a highly motivated state as often as possible.  This is achieved through repeated activities that motivate us, and more importantly, to open ourselves to the potential for any moment to be inspiring.  Don’t wait for the big moments, and make no excuses.  Motivation lies within our recognition in the inspiring power of intentional daily activities.

Working for Inspiration

Tuesday August 12, 2014 #652

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”

~Pablo Picasso

652

To thrive in today’s increasingly complex and fast-paced world, creativity and innovation become foundational competencies.  To develop these and maximize your potential, you must be actively working on learning and applying your knowledge daily.  Learning isn’t enough.  Inspiration doesn’t come readily by standing still.  Application, execution, and then reflection must occur regularly.  As you do so, and if you keep all your senses open, inspiration will strike.  Get going and get inspired!

Making Great Ideas Happen

Tuesday July 1, 2014 #640

“Great ideas need landing gear, as well as wings.” ~C. O. Jackson

640

In any team there are idea generators and there are executers.  Both talents are necessary for great ideas to become actionable and their potential to be realized. It is rare (and wonderful!) to find an individual who possesses great skills in ideation and execution – and if you find them, keep them!  Most people however, will be more skilled in one or the other.  Executers may get frustrated in brainstorming sessions, and ideators can feel trapped by the rules of effective execution.  Your job as leader is to understand your team’s individual skills and leverage them.  Use your idea generators when brainstorming is needed, decide on an idea to take forward, and give it to the executers to make it happen.

Creativity

Tuesday April 8, 2014 #616

“The nature of creativity is to make space for things to happen… We can drive it out with our busyness and plans.”

 ~Iain McGilchrist

616

If you are like most, you allow the busyness of life to remove almost all moments of quiet reflection, time to think, develop new ideas, dream of possibilities, and to create. Everyone possesses the power of creativity and innovation. But few give themselves the time or even the permission to do so. Don’t deprive yourself or the world your potential and abilities. Allow yourself a bit of time to free the creativity within you.

The Lenses We Wear

Thursday March 6, 2014 #607

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”

~Henry David Thoreau

lenses

We all know the “glass half-full” and “glass half-empty” comparison of optimists and pessimists.  However, the power of this simple observation should not be underestimated.  It goes beyond the desirability of a positive outlook.  The very nature of how all aspects of life are perceived is shaped by the lenses we choose to wear.  And yes, it is a choice.  Wearing the lenses of hopefulness, positivity, gratitude, and potential, everything – people, objects, and the world around us – is imbued with possibility and beauty.  The very same things when viewed through the lenses of hopelessness, negativity, and thanklessness show us only impossibility and ugliness.  Make the choice today to wear the lenses that allow you to see the beauty in the world and in yourself.  It will make all the difference.
