Persistence

Tuesday May 23, 2017 #890

“Persistence isn’t using the same tactics over and over. That’s just annoying. Persistence is having the same goal over and over.”

~Seth Godin

This definition of persistence is very important. We often talk about persistence as a key factor to sustainable achievement.  However, the key is having a clear goal you are hungry for and determined to attain. This will give you the courage to keep going even when your efforts fail. Your persistence is in finding new ways to attack the challenge and eventually break through.  Don’t keep banging your head against the wall.  Rather, find new tools to bang the wall with until you knock it down!

Patience

Thursday March 30, 2017 #875

“You don’t win an Olympic gold medal with a few weeks of intensive training.  There’s no such thing as an overnight opera sensation. Great law firms or design companies don’t spring up overnight… Every great company, every great brand, and every great career has been built in exactly the same way: bit by bit, step by step, little by little.”

~Seth Godin

Patience.  One of the most important capabilities needed for success.is the patience to allow our talents and opportunities to come together to create potential.  Patience to create and develop relationships. Patience to learn tools and capabilities and time to put them into practice.  Patience with ourselves as we make mistakes and learn from them.  Patience with others as they play their roles in our lives to help and sometimes hinder our progress.  The road may seem long and that is because it is.  Have the patience to travel that road and enjoy the moments along the way.  Bit by bit, step by step, little by little.

The courage to quit

Thursday March 13, 2008 #18

This week, I’ll finish the series on overcoming that which blocks us from making progress on our goals.

“Vince Lombardi:  ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.’  Bad advice.  Winners quit all the time.  They just quit the right stuff at the right time.

~ Seth Godin

Block #7:  Lacking the courage to quit

If you never enjoy the efforts necessary to push through obstacles, the goal probably isn’t the right goal for you and not worthy of your best efforts and persistence.

This is a challenge we all face from one time or another with our goals.  We’re focused, we have an accountability partner, our goals are in alignment with our core values, etc.  But no matter how hard we try, we literally hate taking the necessary actions to achieve a particular goal.  At some point we have to recognize when a goal isn’t worth the effort and have the courage to quit.

In Seth Godin’s great little book, “The Dip”, he explains that when we are fighting obstacles that are worthy of us then we must hang tough.  But if not, superstars know when to escape dead ends quickly and put their energies into goals that really count.

Your assignments:

1. Read “The Dip,” by Seth Godin

2. Decide if each of your goals is worthy of your efforts and then recommit to them knowing that they are!

You’re a winner!  Focus your energies on the goals that are worthy not only in their achievement, but also in the journey.
